Good answers above but I just want to point out that Warfarin is not really a poison. It acts on the red blood cells of rats and mice (or whatever unlucky animal eats it) as a strong anticoagulant, preventing clotting in the animals which will lead to organ failure and internal bleeding. But this is in high overdose dosage. So to be clear- it is not a poison but an anticoagulant. In your Dad's case, if he's having unfortunate side effects he should talk to the doctor about a possible change in dosage.
What are the symptoms if you are allergic to warfarin medication?
I have been on warfarin for 1 year and the side effects are very traumatic, I was told there are no side effects. This is why I might believe I'm allergic to this rat poisen. Is there a test to prove this statement and what are the symptoms?

Wafarin allergy is very rare, I certainly have never seen it in more than 30 years. It might also have been useful if you had given your symptoms. I could only find skin rashes and diarrhoea listed as side effects on the data sheet and I suspect I would be hard pushed to find any drug that didn't list them as potential side effects.
How much do weekly INR tests run for the patients on Warfarin?
I am asking because my mom is debating weather she should start the warfarin or not for financial reasons. Thanks!

You start doing INR's weekly, once the INR is established then about every 3 to 4 weeks. If the numbers are low about every 10 days or so. Blood draw can range from $20 to $30. Ask her Dr. where she can go(a lab) that would not cause a burden on her finances Your Mom's health comes first. Warfarin is the generic form of coumadan
Are there any pregnant ladies out there who have an artificial heart valve and are taking warfarin?
How has the pregancy been, have you had to come off warfarin and have you been closley monitored? I only ask as i have an artifical heart valve and am conerned that the risks will outweigh the benefits when the time comes for me to start a family.

What is the best natural alternative for coumadin or warfarin?
Nattokinise, a product made from fermented soy has been recommended but have other info that it's not nearly as effective a blood thinner.
There must be some natural product out there that beats having
to take rat poison.

I will try to research this out more for you, but what ever you do if you are on Coumadin for a-fib, arrhythmia's or blood clots DO NOT STOP TAKING IT UNTIL YOUR SURE THE OTHER PRODUCT WORKS! My mother died because the Dr's. took her off Coumadin and she shouldn't have been

Pain management for muscular pain in someone on Warfarin?
My elderly relative has a (she thinks) muscular pain in her back - (has been in hospital lately and they didn't think it was anything other than a muscular pain) but she's on Warfarin and so can only take Paracetamol.
The pain is really persistent and it would be great if I could find some other option that I could then suggest to her GP. (No good suggesting exercise as she's not very mobile at present). Advice appreciated.

You are quite right that paracetamol is the analgesic least likely to upset her warfarin control. However, if that is not controlling her pain then a paracetamol and codeine combination such as co-codamol would also be fine. Ask her GP.
What are the side effects of drinking on coumidin(warfarin)?
I have to take blood thinners for the rest of my life. I take (15mg) every day but sunday which is (10mg). On top of that i drink alcohol some times heavily. What are some of the side effectsof doing this? I've experienced nothing.

If you got in an accident, you would be up the creek, without a paddle. I'd think twice before drinking and taking coumadin. Don't forget that coumadin is a blood thinner...yikes. A disaster waiting to happen...
Can itching be a side effect of Warfarin?
I have been on Warfarin 5-7mg everyday for the past 3 weeks or so after being hospitalized with a total of 4 blood clots. I had a large clot in right knee 2-3 weeks following an ACL surgical repair, a small clot in the other leg, a pulmonary embolus in my pulmonary artery (worst clot of all) and a PE in the other lung in a smaller vessel. I am being monitored and my INR has been in the 2.0 - 3.0 level where they want it for about two weeks. This week I was slightly high (INR of 4.2) and they held the med one day and decreased the dose to 5mg until next test.
I am noticing small red dots on the inside of my forearms that itch. I do not have them anywhere else on me. No one else in the house has them, at first I thought it might be a bite of some kind. It is just slightly pink and very tiny. Not bruising or anything like that.
MD at the anticoagulation clinic did not seem impressed. Anyone else on Warfarin have symptom like this?

You may be having an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients or a side effect to warfarin itself. One dermatological side effect from warfarin is rash and pruritus (itching). Did the itching and dots started on the first week on warfarin or just now? Are you allergic to some other meds, food, etc? Maybe you are allergic to the dye used for the tablet. I'm just guessing. But, certainly you should address this to your doctor. Give him specifics: when it started, if itches, what relieve the itching, if you are allergic, etc. I don't think is hemorrhage or something like that. But you may want to get a second opinion about it.
