Fetal Risk Summary

Smallpox vaccine is a live, attenuated virus vaccine (1,2). Although smallpox infection had a high mortality rate, the disease has been largely eradicated from the world (1,3). Vaccination during pregnancy between 3 and 24 weeks has resulted in fetal death (2,3). A 1974 Reference reviewed the published reports of smallpox vaccination during pregnancy and found 20 cases of fetal vaccinia among more than 8,500 maternal vaccinations (4). Of the 21 exposed fetuses (1 set of twins), only 3 of the 10 liveborns survived. There was only weak evidence, however, that vaccination during the 1st trimester increased fetal wastage compared with that occurring later in gestation (4).

Although the incidence of fetal vaccinia with subsequent poor outcome resulting from maternal vaccination appears to be rare, most sources consider smallpox vaccine to be contraindicated during pregnancy (1,2 and 3,5).

Q&A about Vaccine Smallpox

How is smallpox vaccine manufactured without smallpox virus?
Here an interesting question.

How is a smallpox vaccine manufactured for the military when it is supposed to be wiped out?

I can't seem to think of any other diesase used other the cowpox..
The mom
Smallpox isn't wiped out as in wiped out of existence off the face of the earth. It still exists, in the CDC laboratories, in freezers. They also keep stores of vaccine, and in 2000 contracted with a lab to produce additional stores of it. The virus is used to produce the vaccine, not cowpox or any other type of "pox". Cowpox infections offer future resistance to smallpox, but doesn't confer immunity- so the small pox vaccination would still be needed if there were an outbreak.

How does the Smallpox Vaccine work?
How does the smallpox vaccine work. I heard something about B cells and Vaccina?!

If anyone has any websites with good scientific detail too I'd appreciate it!

Thanks.

how was the smallpox vaccine discovered?
how was the smallpox vaccine discovered
Iain C
by the observation that women working on farms milking cows who had the related condition 'cowpox' seemed to catch small pox far less.

Cowpox is similar enough to smallpox to confer some immunity to smallpox. Yet cowpox isn't very dangerous to humans.

This lead to the idea of innoculating against the virus using cowpox.Which is what they initially did.

Where can I find a picture of a smallpox vaccine scar?
My daughter is doing a paper on smallpox and would like a picture of a person that has that scar. Neither my wife nor my scar still shows and we dont want to ask someone else. Please help!

Where can I order The SmallPox Vaccine?
I was Wondering if anyone knew where I could Get a Smallpox vaccine or even a doctor that can administer the vaccine?
Nickie
Go to your own doctor and ask them for advise. They would have a medical database access to medical doctors that can administer the vaccine, and would more likely to get the information faster.

They can also give a referral.

how should i start my smallpox vaccine paper?
i am having trouble thinking of a way to start off my paper i have no clue!!! can someone help me

Try starting with history of the disease. When was it first recorded? (I can't remember right now, it's been a while, but I think it was China more than 400 years ago). Google that to get a starting place.

Look at the history of the vaccine. When did they first discover that dairymaids who had been exposed to cowpox (yeah, I said COWpox) didn't get smallpox? Who did the first vaccine (it was a live cowpox virus) and how long was it until he had convinced people to do vaccinations? When did it become a wide spread vaccination practice (sometime last century). What were the side effects? Why did they stop doing the vaccinations in the 70s?

Go into the disease, its effects, its long term effects on survivors, how many people it killed, the cycles it would show up in (every 20 or so years {figure out how many, the info is out there} it would break out big again and decimate chunks of the world). How do you tell it apart from chickenpox?

Why am I being so helpful? Cause I just finished a major lit review paper and am having fellow-feeling for anyone stuck with an assignment and no idea of how to start.

Smallpox is actually a very interesting disease. Check out the CDC website for basic info, and when you google it, make sure the sites you use are creditable. Also, google OWL at Purdue for writing tips.

Good luck!

Why is there a vaccine for smallpox, but not for HIV?
Why is there a vaccine for smallpox, but not for HIV?

Websites, especially biochemical, would be great.

Thanks!

There are many HIV vaccines in the works. Whether or not they are effective remains to be seen. The big problem with HIV is that if mutates very quickly.

I had the smallpox vaccine about 4 months ago, how long does the raised skin stay raised?
I received the smallpox vaccine in preparation for a deployment to the middle east. The area where the 3 pricks were applied is still a raised area. How long will this area stay like this? My test was negative but the scar is still there, it is really annoying.
The mom
The smallpox vaccine was not a test- it was a vaccination. The prick marks are scars and will not go away. You can use Mederma on the scar to help reduce the appearance, but it may or may not cause it to fade completely. Those of us old enough to have recieved the smallpox vaccination in our youth still carry the scars on our upper arms or backs, and will for life. The scar is identical to the ones people who actually get smallpox were covered in. In old literature, you will often see references to the scarring that was left, sometimes it caused disfigurement of the face which was devastating to the women of the times. Sorry, the scar is there to stay- it's proof of the vaccination. The raised area may settle down some, but if that's how you scar, that's how you scar. MIne is dime sized, and has faded to a lighter color with tiny little red spots. My last vaccination was decades ago, as well.

I am thinking about going back into the armed forces, I have been out for a few years and I want to know if I will be forced to recieve either of these vaccines? I am willing to get the Smallpox, but I will not get the Anthrax.
