Name: SENNA
Class: Laxative
Risk Factor:    C

Fetal Risk Summary

Senna, a naturally occurring laxative, contains the stereoisomeric glucosides sennosides A and B. These anthraquinone glucosides are prodrugs that are converted by bacterial enzymes in the colon to rhein-9-anthrone that is oxidized to rhein, the active cathartic agent of senna (1). Senna is not teratogenic in animals (2). No reports of human teratogenicity or other fetal toxicity have been located.

Breast Feeding Summary

Sennosides A and B are not excreted into human breast milk. A 1973 study using colorimetric analysis (sensitivity limit 0.34 µg/mL) failed to detect the natural agents (3). The active metabolite, rhein, however, is excreted into milk in very small amounts (1). Lactating women administered 5 g of senna daily for 3 days excreted a mean 0.007% of the dose in their milk and no adverse effects were observed in the nursing infants. This is compatible with the fact that the anthraquinone laxatives are absorbed only slightly after oral administration (4). In addition to the study above (1), use of the laxative during lactation has been reported in three other studies (3,5,6). Although diarrhea occurred in some of the infants, this was probably related to other causes, not to senna. In one study, mothers who ingested a single 100-mg dose of senna (containing 8.6 mg of sennosides A and B) and whose infants developed diarrhea were later given a double dose of the laxative (3). No diarrhea was observed in the infants after the higher dose. The American Academy of Pediatrics considers senna to be compatible with breast feeding (7).

How do I grow Indian Senna, and where can I get its seeds!!??
I want to grow senna seeds, I live in Florida, so I know temperature is warm enough, but I don't know how to get its seeds, or what kind of soil etc. it needs.

Check with your local nursery and see if they can either order in plants for you, or find seeds. Either one should be easy to locate, so try different plant nursery's until you find what you're looking for.

Is it safe to give senna tea to a kitten?
It's often constipated and I was wondering if a few drops of senna infusion might help - or will it be dangerous for its health? The kitten is very young (2-3 weeks).
kath
i am assuming you are hand rearing it. it wont be constipated at that age. when i was pottying my lil furbabies i ended up using kitchen towel on their lil bottoms. at that age you could give a little moist food as they would be trying out mums food. if you are really worried then take it along to you vet as they had to help me when my little ones mumwas hospitalised for the reason she could not feed her babies. they have techniques for getting them to go, at that age they don't go to toilet everytime but they do wee every time they are feed. if you need advice on hand rearing feel free to email me

Why isnt James Allen comparing Heikki to Senna now that he has beaten everyone else by such a large margine?
After Canadian qualifying James Allen was comparing Hamilton to senna because he outqualified the rest of the grid by half a second. Now Kovalainen does the same thing in much more windy/challenging conditions and no mention of the great man. What a load of crap from the english press as usual.
Michael T
a couple of strong performances is hardly any reason to be compared to Senna.

What should I expect when I drink Senna tea?
So i bought this box of senna tea at this health food store. I am just worried about trying it, the package says to prepare the cup of tea and drink it before i go to bed. So im just worried as to what i should expect...I dont want to end up running to the bathroom every five minutes the next day..ya know...I am also wondering if anyone has any tips or directions of warnings that would not be on the package and maybe what ur experience with senna tea has been. Thanx!
eve
It have to refer to your own body....some are active on a person some do not....but ifyou feel that something is not right with you stomach.....stop at ones....or consult a doctor....some diet drinks makes us go rushing to toilet, but the best way still is excercise.....if you drink without excercise it would still be the same....take my advice...excercise works...

What was the cause of Ayrton Senna's fatal accident?
I was just watching various videos today on Youtube and this is the first time I saw his accident. He did not attempt the corner so what was the cause? Did the car steering break or did Senna have a fatal medical event before the corner like an aneurysm?
Cavallino Silver
It's still a mystery. The official most plausible theory is that his car jumped for a fraction of a second because of the cold tyres (after a slow lap under safety car I think, apparently the floor of the car was touching the track instead of the tyres). Not realising this, he attempted a correction by steering in the other direction and it ended up tragically.

Senna was not the kind of driver that just crashes out like that without something triggering it, specially during that weekend, he was aware Ratzenberger had died and I doubt he would have been careless in that situation.

What did Ayrton Senna mean to the Brazilian people?
I know he was a hero but on what scale? A member of the 94 world cup winning team(i cant remember who) said that Pele was a hero in brazil but Senna was something else, something more than that to the brazilian people.
jordanac...
Hi! I'm a Brazilian girl and I think that we feel this love for him because he was the best pilot in the world history. Besides, he was always worried about poor children and wanted to do something for them, but died before he could do it. Because of this his family has created Ayrton Senna Institute, which cares about poor Brazilian children.

My wife, who is Brasilian, says that Senna was an inspiration to everyone in Brasil. He was a millionaire, but they only found out after he died that he gave away huge swathes of his money to charities to help the poor in his country. She says also that he was a very humble guy & not full of himself in the way that some famous sporting celebrities are.

Why is Senna more regarded than Prost nowadays?
The french driver scored more points, had more wins and more world titles.

While they were teammates, Prost outscored Senna in both seasons (88 and 89).

All the percentages are in favor of Prost, apart from poles (but poles are utterly useless if are not converted in victories, and Senna converted only a rough 60%, while Prost had "only" 33 poles, but he had also 51 victories!).

So, why is Senna career so trumpeted and Prost career so underrated?
rosbif
@Christos: Prost DID outscore Senna in 1988, but the "11 best scores" system meant that Senna took the title: Prost actually scored 105 points compared to 94 for Senna, but whereas Senna could count 90 of those, Prost could only count 87 of his.

Also, Senna was perfectly capable of sitting on a lead when his car had problems, as he proved in the first four races of 1991: he was missing between one and three gears by the finish of EACH of those races, but he was able to do just enough to win (he won those races by 16s, 2s, 1s and 18s...). What Senna did do was make mistakes when there was no problem: Monza in 1987, Monaco and Monza in 1988 for example.

Senna was a genius, but the fact remains that Prost beat him in equal machinery two years in a row at McLaren, and ran him close in an inferior Ferrari the year afterwards. After that, Prost was past his prime and Senna was indisputably the best driver in the world.

As to the actual question, I put Prost above Senna simply because he was exceptionally quick while making hardly any mistakes; Senna made mistakes all through his career, and they cost him a great deal. Prost was usually faster than Senna on a clear track, while Senna was fastest when lapping other cars. Senna tends to have the edge when people ask "who was better" simply because he was a more exciting driver to watch...he LOOKED faster than Prost, even if he actually wasn't.

Is it true that Senna stopped his car to help an other driver?
i saw the vid on youtube. does anyone have a longer one ? and the story behind it ? and what the other drivers thought and commentors ?
samantha...
Yes it is, In 1992 at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium during Friday free practice Érik Comas crashed his Ligier-Renault very heavily at the flat-out Blanchimont section. Other drivers drove past the wreckage at high speed, but Senna jumped out of his car and sprinted back down the track to the wrecked car to do what he could to assist the Frenchman, who was knocked unconscious but thankfully uninjured.
