Protamine is a protein used to reverse the effects of Heparin. It is used by anesthesiologists during open heart surgery or aortic surgery where large doses of heparin were administered because the patient was placed on bypass or the aorta was cross-clamped.

It has many side effects including allergic reactions and hypercoagulation if too large a dose is administered or a dose is unnecessarily given.
