Name: PHENAZOPYRIDINE
Class: Urinary Tract Agent (Analgesic)
Risk Factor: BM
Fetal Risk Summary
No reports linking the use of phenazopyridine with congenital defects have been located. The Collaborative Perinatal Project monitored 50,282 mother-child pairs, 219 of which had 1st trimester exposure to phenazopyridine (1, pp. 299–308). For use anytime during pregnancy, 1,109 exposures were recorded (1, p. 435). In neither group was evidence found to suggest a relationship to large categories of major or minor malformations or to individual defects.
In a surveillance study of Michigan Medicaid recipients involving 229,101 completed pregnancies conducted between 1985 and 1992, 496 newborns had been exposed to phenazopyridine during the 1st trimester (F. Rosa, personal communication, FDA, 1993). A total of 27 (5.4%) major birth defects were observed (21 expected), including (observed/expected) 7/5 cardiovascular defects and 1/1 oral cleft. No anomalies were observed in four other defect categories (spina bifida, polydactyly, limb reduction defects, and hypospadias) for which specific data were available. These data do not support an association between the drug and congenital defects.

I have a possible UTI pain w/urination, back pain(test a dr's office was negative but they sent urine out for cultures) and have presciption for antibotic and phenazopyridine. The dr nor pharmacists mentioned i should not be wearing soft conacts while wearing i just noticed it on the long pamphlet they give you for directions on how to take medication. Problem i have to wear glasses or contacs and my current glasses are very old and i can barely see out of them. I wear contacts everyday and i have astigmatism. If i wear my contacts for a few hours tomorrow at least to drive to work pick up my laptop so i can work from home will they stain? If they stain will i still be able to see through them? Has anyone worn their contacts while taking this medicine what happened? I already took one pill and have my contacts in still. Have plenty of backup conact lenses im prepared to throw the one i have on now and any i wear tomorrow away.
As you know, I am NOT a doctor, so please don't take this as medical advice. However, since you just started using it, I cannot see the harm in one day's use (or a couple of hours) of your contacts with this prescription.
I went onto a website called www.drugs.com and it said: "It is best not to wear soft contact lenses while being treated with this medicine. Phenazopyridine may cause discoloration or staining of contact lenses. It may not be possible to remove the stain. " So try it for one day and pop them in and out as needed.
Hope everything works out for you.
Reproduction studies have been performed in rats at doses up to 50 mg/kg/day and have revealed no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus due to Pyridium (Phenazopyridine Hydrochloride). There are however, no adequate and well controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.

Does anyone know if Uristat (AKA phenazopyridine, it turns the urine bright orange) can mess up the results of a home pregnancy test?
