Fetal Risk Summary

Oxtriphylline is a methylxanthine that is metabolized to theophylline. Theophylline has been found in cord blood but not in the serum of an infant whose mother had taken oxtriphylline during pregnancy (1). No adverse effects in the infant were observed (see also Theophylline).

In a surveillance study of Michigan Medicaid recipients involving 229,101 completed pregnancies conducted between 1985 and 1992, 63 newborns had been exposed to oxtriphylline during the 1st trimester (F. Rosa, personal communication, FDA, 1993). One (1.6%) major birth defect was observed (three expected). No anomalies were observed in six defect categories (cardiovascular defects, oral clefts, spina bifida, polydactyly, limb reduction defects, and hypospadias) for which specific data were available.
