Breast Feeding Summary
Metrizamide is excreted into milk in small quantities (1). A woman was injected with 5.06 g of metrizamide into the subarachnoid space. Milk levels increased linearly with time, but only 1.1 mg (0.02%) of the dose was recovered in 44.3 hours. This amount of contrast media probably does not pose a risk to the nursing infant. The American Academy of Pediatrics considers metrizamide to be compatible with breast feeding (2).
