Side affects of lipitor?

 Category: Lipitor

Questions and Answers

Why is it that doctors routinely dismiss your claims that the medicine is causing side affects..?

Even when your symptoms are side affects listed for that drug.

Example:
I was taking Lipitor for cholesterol and began having severe muscle pains and weakness.
My doctor said that Lipitor wasn't the cause and gave me an antacid.
I took it upon myself to quit taking the drug and within one and a half weeks all of the pain went away. The weakness lasts a lifetime.
I switched medicine.

I happen to know from experience, that doctors & apparently your doctor, don't know everything there is to know about meds they prescribe. The person who does know, is your drug store pharmacist. Some doctors need to smarten up, pay attention, & listen to their patients. Who but the patients know their bodies best?

Questions about side effects of Lipitor, toprol re heart and stopping meds?

I have ischemia and irregular heartbeat which I don't really understand, erratic high blood pressure, an injured knee which is always kind of swollen (inflammed?), carpal tunnel and an ongoing neck injury from legal computer work (which I no longer do). I felt so exhausted, very weak, very depressed, mentally confused and slow. Needless to say, the incapable, weak, incompetent affects have never beeen a part of my life before. THEREFORE, I decided to stop all meds about 3 weeks ago. I really feel so much better and stronger. A nurse told me, no matter what, don't take Lipitor; as you get older your muscles will all be wasted and you don't want that. I DON'T want that. Now I am wondering what to do about the ischemia and clogged arteries . I'm leary of my heart dr. who told me I could take Adderall with ischemia and an inflammation bec. it speeds up my erratic heart??? Inflammation is not supposed to be good for ischemia. Can anyone help me understand where to do from here?

Find the nurse who gave you the advice about LIpitor and buy her dinner. people within the medical fraternity like this are are pure gold. Perhaps she could even reccomend a doctor who also hasn't been brainwashed by the pharmaceutical industry. Lipitor does have loads of side effects

Every trial for statins has shown no overall decrease in mortality, except in men who have already had a heart attack, or are dibetic. For all other men these trials have shown an increase in death from other causes that counters the decrease in death from heart attack.
No trial has ever shown a benefit for women to take statins, some even showing an increase in mortality

None of the proponents of statins here can ever show one randomised, double blind tial that shows a benefit (using absolute rather than relative risk) to men who have not had a heart attack, or to women full stop. This includes those from within the industry, such as Harmony

Would you take lipitor? just got out of hospital, they did angioplasty and?

a ct scan and everything came out normal...my cholesterol is very high, 375 and i have heart disease run in my family, father just had 2 stents put in..anyway, i always have such bad side affects from meds and am so scared to take lipitor, not real sure....anyone have an constructive input?

Given your set of circumstances, yes---in a heartbeat (no pun intended).

By definition, if you had angioplasty, things *aren't* "normal." You have narrowed, diseased blood vessels.Your #1 aim is to minimize the risk of disease progression.

Getting your cholesterol down is critical to this.

It may not be a lifetime prescription---you may find that lifestyle changes make it unnecessary at some point. However, with your family history, it might well be something you do require for the long run.

Lipitor is not risk-free---but you are in a very, very high-risk category, in terms of your cardiac status---so the risk vs. benefit ratio of the drug leans very heavily toward taking it.

Stay healthy!

what is the difference between lipitor and crestor?

i have had high cholesterol for some time i have tried it all and always had bad side effects with all of them even the generic when crestor came out my doctor started me on them 5mg and no side affects at all is there something that the other cholesterol meds. have that crestrol dont my doc has been giving me the samples for my insurance will not pay for them evening knowing i have tried them all i dont know how long i will be able to get them from my doc he says as long as he has them he will give to me crestor has really brought my cholesterol down it used to be in the 300 now its in the 100 is there any place i can get them that they will not be so much ty for listing have a great day

Lipitor is a type of calcium that can help with cholesterol and heart disease

Crestor is a prescription cholesterol medicine that helps lower cholesterol and slow atherosclerosis progression

I know that in cases like this is usually better to use the generic stuff for the reason that is is specifically targeted to hit only one area! vs several!
plus it is cheaper.

here is what I just read off a web page.

Zocor is the Generac and can be purchased LEGALLY on line.

Zocor (simvastatin) is used along with an overall diet plan in order to reduce high blood cholesterol levels. Zocor can significantly reduce the amount of LDL ("bad") cholesterol in the blood while simultaneously raising the levels of HDL-C ("good") cholesterol. Zocor may also be prescribed for other reasons. It has been proven to
reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in high-risk patients such as diabetics or heart patients, regardless of their blood cholesterol levels.

I put in the link to the place i looked at.

good luck on your battle! there is nothing better then good health

Pain in upper leg due to taking niacin?

My 31 year old son in law has been experiencing upper leg pain. He has been put on niacin for high triglycerides. Has anyone experienced this muscle/bone ache with taking niacin? My husband was on Lipitor and he suddenly experienced leg pain. Come to find out it was the Lipitor that was causing it. He is now on Crestor and has no pain. Please be aware of this very little advertised side affect of satin drugs, particularly in older adults. Can niacin do the same thing?

Niacin is known to cause the same leg pain experienced in the statin class of drugs. The likelyhood is less than the statins, but it can occur especially if it is in a high dose. Have your son call his doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Side Note: The leg pain your husband experienced may be due to something called "rhabdomyolysis." It causes the muscles in your legs to wear away. It is a "rare, but serious side effect" as all the advertisements have explained. All the statins have this warning which is why all patients on statins are supposed to get regular blood tests to check CPK levels. If these levels are high, it is most likely due to the wear away of muscles. Crestor is actually more potent than Lipitor so it is very rare that a doctor will switch a patient from Lipitor TO Crestor since Crestor is known to cause the muscle wasting more often than the other drugs in its class. Was he switched from very high dose Lipitor to a very low dose Crestor? He probably could have just been switched to low dose Lipitor and would have had the same outcome :no more leg pain.

The low-fat, low-cholesterol program: FOODS PERMITTED

SOUPS: Emphasize bouillons and consommés, as they are low in calories and fats. They are ideal for relieving that hungry feeling quickly. Soups stimulate the digestive juices. Use fat-free vegetable soups, vegetable broths, and soups prepared with skimmed milk. It is imperative to remove all visible fat and grease from the soup

MEATS: Beef, veal, and lamb are naturally high in both visible and "invisible" fat. However, since their protein content is most desirable they are basic ingredients in the low-fat diet. Much of the dietary fat allowance is contained in meat, which has its greatest amount of calories predominantly in fat. The visible fat must be carefully cut away and trimmed while raw, before cooking. During the cooking, baking, or broiling of the meat, the fat should be drained off by keeping the meat or roast on racks. Do not fry meats. Pan-cook or brown without fat or grease.

Remember that among meats pork, bacon, and ham are highest in fat and cholesterol content. They should not be eaten on the low-fat diet other than occasionally. The same is generally true of sausages, and organ foods like brains, sweetbreads, and kidneys. Liver is an exception, however.

If gravy is desired, it must be prepared free of its usual very high fat content. Instead of gravies, meats can be flavored by the following garnishes: watercress, parsley, celery, carrots, radishes, pimento, pickles, paprika, green peppers, cucumbers, mushrooms, and onions. Also helpful are spiced peaches, pears, prunes, apricots, cinnamon apples, spiced watermelon rind, applesauce, cinnamon pears, pineapple pieces, broiled bananas, seasoned tomatoes, herbs, and the various relishes such as mint jellies and sauces, chili, catsup, cranberry jellies, chutney, and many others. Also appealing are some of the following seasonings: garlic cloves, thyme, marjoram, basil, oregano, bay, and peppermint.

FISH: fish are often excellent low-fat food sources. Some fish are especially low in fat, such as perch, haddock, flounder, sturgeon, smelts, and scallops. Others like brook trout, porgy, cod, and croakers are higher in fat content, but are still quite low compared with meats. Shell-fish are low in fat. Lobster, shrimps, and crabs are ideal examples. Clams are next; oysters are a bit higher but are still low in comparison with beef. For the connoisseurs, frogs-legs are also low in fat content. Many canned fish when not packed in oil are very low in fat.

POULTRY: Chicken and turkey are excellent sources of animal proteins for low-fat content, provided lean poultry is used. The dark meat of poultry is higher in fat content than white meat. Skin should be discarded. Giblets are very high. Guinea hen and squab are also comparatively low in fat content. However, duck and goose are extremely high in fat and should not be included unless the fat is drained off and removed. As a matter of fact, the fat from chicken and turkey, even though much less quantitatively than that in meat, is best drained off and removed in the same manner as in the preparation and cooking of all meats.

EGGS: Egg whites, which are proteins, may be eaten and used for cooking as much as desired. The yellow portion of the egg, or the yolk, contains one of the most concentrated forms or fat available—namely cholesterol—and therefore should be avoided.

MILK AND MILK PRODUCTS: One pint or more daily of non-fat or skim milk should be taken. Use fortified milk with added amounts of vitamin A and D. Buttermilk is also a refreshing source of milk with low-fat content. As an added source of low-fat protein, skim or fat-free milk can be fortified by adding to each glass of milk one or more tablespoonfuls of dried, skim milk. This "fortified" milk also has a thick creamy taste and can be flavored to suit the individual taste with various flavoring agents. Yogurt made from non-fat milk can also be used for nutritious variety.

CHEESES: cannot be used but there are several exceptions. First is cottage cheese made from dry curd and non-fat milk. One of the most frequent pitfalls is the user's failure to notice that often she is using or buying creamed cottage cheese, which of course does contain fat. This creamed cottage cheese can be corrected by washing it out with cold water through a strainer. Various brands of cottage cheese that taste like creamed cottage cheese are available, such as "Slim Cheez" or Ricotta Cheese made from milk whey. There are also other foreign cheeses low in fat content, which are processed from non-fat milk or whey, such as the Geska type of Sapsago cheese certain Scandinavian cheeses, and in the United States brands of jack cheese made from skim milk or whey..

VEGETABLES AND FRUITS: Vegetables are virtually fat free and contain no cholesterol. To prepare vegetables without butter or fat a little originality is required by the cook, such as by the use of herbs or seasoning. Since many o

Does anyone have wierd side effects from cholestrol drugs?????

Ive been taking lipitor and have tried lipidil cholestrol tablets, each for 2years.At first they're fine but slowly they start to affect my brain like I have altzeimers. My short term memory goes Kaput until I can,t even add two and two together. They also cause me to have really bad symptoms of hayfever...my eyes run continuously and the lids feel like they are sunburned and papery(when I stop the tablets everything goes back slowly to normal) This is really troubleing, especially the brain side of things,as you don't realise that its getting worse and worse.( In a very old person I'm sure it could be mistaken for Altzeimers)Has anyone else had any of these side effects as they are not stated on the manufacturers lists at all?

Ive taken Lipitor for 10 years. None of the stuff you think you have is a result of taking Lipitor.
