Lipitor leg pain?

Has anyone experienced lower leg discoloration, edema, and lower leg pain from taking Lipitor? My fiance was on Lipitor for a few months and developed the above problems while taking the drug so he stopped. It has been over a year since, and the brown color is still covering his shins, he still has swelling (this is similar to the water retention women get while pregnant - you can push on a spot and it stays indented), and today he told me that the pain is becoming intolerable. The doctor that prescribed the Lipitor in the first place dismissed and still dismisses my fiance's complaints, but there is no other doctor in our small town or the surrounding towns that he can go to (insurance). I am just curious to see if anyone had heard of these problems and what was done to try to resolve them.
It says in the commercials to let you doctor know if you have any muscle pain. Lipitor can cause liver damage, among other things, so it's best he sees his doctor right away.
Pain in upper leg due to taking niacin? My 31 year old son in law has been experiencing upper leg pain. He has been put on niacin for high triglycerides. Has anyone experienced this muscle/bone ache with taking niacin? My husband was on Lipitor and he suddenly experienced leg pain. Come to find out it was the Lipitor that was causing it. He is now on Crestor and has no pain. Please be aware of this very little advertised side affect of satin drugs, particularly in older adults. Can niacin do the same thing?
Niacin is known to cause the same leg pain experienced in the statin class of drugs. The likelyhood is less than the statins, but it can occur especially if it is in a high dose. Have your son call his doctor or pharmacist immediately.
Side Note: The leg pain your husband experienced may be due to something called "rhabdomyolysis." It causes the muscles in your legs to wear away. It is a "rare, but serious side effect" as all the advertisements have explained. All the statins have this warning which is why all patients on statins are supposed to get regular blood tests to check CPK levels. If these levels are high, it is most likely due to the wear away of muscles. Crestor is actually more potent than Lipitor so it is very rare that a doctor will switch a patient from Lipitor TO Crestor since Crestor is known to cause the muscle wasting more often than the other drugs in its class. Was he switched from very high dose Lipitor to a very low dose Crestor? He probably could have just been switched to low dose Lipitor and would have had the same outcome :no more leg pain.
Mom's leg pain (muscle or blood vessel);Stain use, read on:? My Mom's been taking Lipitor approx. 2 + ?
yrs; she's now been hurting in her left leg, down below knees; she's not sure if it's muscle or blood vessel that's hurting ,pretty bad & frequently. My sister are her care-givers (as they live near her); I help with her sometimes, as much as I can. They have to take her to Doc every wk. or two - for her
diabetes too low/ and / or too high. She's been complaining about the leg pain off & on for past several weeks. Do u think her pain could be in muscle due to rare side effect of
the Lipitor (that disease/ ailment that starts with an R , i think, --the one that causes muscle-breakdown and then kidney damage!
I don't know if she nor sis already informed Doc of her pain in leg. my question: would Mom be running a fever if she does have
that rare side effect? / thus far, my sisters &Bro.-- do not live with Mom&Dad,but go by&give her insulin&meds.,&other chores
Is theRare sideEffect diagnosed by blood Tests(by her Doc)? any help/comment.
If she's been taking the Lipitor for more than 2 years without incident, than it most likely isn't from the Lipitor. However, her doctor will make the decision to take her off of it or not. The leg pain could be caused by Neuropathy, which is common in diabetics, especially since it seems like your mom's diabetes isn't really under control (here sugar isn't stable). The most important thing is for your mom to get to her doctor ASAP! (p.s. the "R" disease from the statins is called Rhabdomyolysis)
Does Lipitor cause muscle pain? I have been on Lipitor for about 2 years. About 2 months ago I developed muscle pain, worse in my legs in my legs but also in my
trunk. I was taking the tablets at bedtime and the pain arrived about half an hour later, enough to keep me awake or to wake me up if i had got to sleep. I started taking neurofen and codeine at bedtime just to get off to sleep, but was woken with pain after about 3 hours. Then two weeks ago I stopped taking the Lipitor and the problem disappeared. Is this a familiar story to anyone else?
I am wondering whether to stay off them altogether or to start taking half doses.
YES,SEE:
Lipitor, a statin drug widely used to lower cholesterol, has been implicated in a number of cases involving muscle pain and muscle tissue degeneration. Understanding the effect that Lipitor has on the body may provide answers for those concerned about the side effects associated with this medication. It may also lead the way to alternative cholesterol treatments.
The active ingredient in Lipitor is atorvastatin, a drug that inhibits the production of an enzyme that the body uses to make cholesterol. The intention is good, but there are problems inherent in reducing the production of cholesterol in the body. Cholesterol plays a vital role for every cell in the body. Without enough of it, the body cannot repair and replace cell membranes, and they will degenerate and die.
Muscle tissue, like every other kind of tissue, needs a certain amount of cholesterol in order to stay healthy and function properly. The use of Lipitor may actually restrict cholesterol too much, causing muscle aches and pain due to tissue degeneration. Much about the full effect of statin drugs on the body remains unknown; however, it is clear that they should be used with caution, and only when other avenues have been exhausted.
Unicity International, a leader in the field of nutrition, believes that a better solution to the problem of high cholesterol is a natural one. They offer an all-natural product proven to lower cholesterol without harmful side effects. Bios Life 2 is a liquid fiber supplement that removes excess cholesterol without interfering with the body's cholesterol producing mechanisms. The addition of antioxidant vitamins C and E, and a highly absorbable form of chromium, makes this formula the most complete natural cholesterol-lowering supplement on the market today.
anyone have experiences on side effects of statin use for cholestorol? my dad has stopped using lipitor, but has leg pain now. i take simvastatin, but my test levels show good, considering stopping medication.
leg pain is definitely a side affect of Lipitor also being tired. his DR might have him try another statin like Crestor
How safe is Zetia and Lipitor (Dr. recommended) when taken at the same time? This was prescribed to control cholesterol levels. A loss of equilibrium has been experienced, plus leg pains. The doctor insists that I stay on the meds.
Leg pains are a side effect. I would not take any cholesterol meds unless your levels are extremely high. There's just too high of a risk for side effects with the liver and with the muscles.
I had a doctor tell me I should go on them to get my LDL below 100. It was 124 which in the lab range was normal. I dumped this doctor quickly. I had a total cholesterol of 226. When my underactive thyroid got diagnosed I got this down to 201 and most recently with diet I got it down to 167. There was no way I was going o meds when all my levels are now within normal range.
For my diet, I add walnuts or almonds to my whole grain cereal each morning. I use olive oil more. Before dinner I take raw apple cider vinegar in a glass of ice tea and I take a fiber supplement at lunch time.
Some supplements lke niacin or B vitamins can lower cholesterol levels but I think I'd try diet and exercise first.
have been asked what side effects I experienced whilst taking Lipitor.? The side effects are aching legs and joints and tender muscles. Also lower back pain (which was there intermittently earler but much worse with Lipitor), itchy skin all over. I now feel fantastic since being off that terrible drug for approx 1 week.
Hopefully you won't have to go back on the Lipitor but my mother and father have suffered from very similiar effects. My husband and I were introduced to a nutritional juice called Monavie which we gave to my parents. The juice has completly leveled their cholesterol where the doctor has taken them off the Lipitor. The juice is made from a berry called the ACAI berry from the Amazon. If you want to read more about it you may enter Monavie.com and you will see how great this product is. Dr. Perricone which is the doctor that comes out on the Oprah show has made it the # 1 super food in his book because it has antioxidants and it helps with inflammation and all kinds of pain. You will not be sorry for trying this. My husband and I have been drinking it for 3 months now have become independent distributors because we love it so much (not to mention that the pay is great) and we definetly sleep 100% better and we don't wake up with any back pains. My mothers friend is diabetic and her levels have lowered by 100 points. If you want more info you may email us and we can send you more info. Hope this helps!
i cant take lipitor--what other option do i have for cholesterol med, other than statins (allergic)? statins cause me severe leg pains and extreme tiredness
If you have trouble with medications due to the side effects, you can try herbal supplements. Red Yeast Rice is real good for lowering cholesterol levels, if they are mild to moderately high.

Cramping in the upper leg and foot? Constant mild cramps in my left side. Not pain, just discomfort. Upper thigh, mid calf and foot. Sometimes feels hot. 57 year old female. On lipitor for cholesterol. Exercise regularly. Good diet. What could be the reason for this discomfort?
Most likely caused by a lack of minerals. Magnesium, potassium, and calcium. The drugs you are taking could be depleting the minerals and the calcium you are taking may not be absorbing into your body (most kinds the body can't absorb correctly) and calcium without natural vitamin D (the sun) is worthless. You may need to increase your mineral intake, best done using natural sources. Check out a good health food store for direction. Drinking any kind of soda depletes your body of minerals and could be the cause. Carbonation leaches vitamins from the bones.
