Lipitor dosage?

Questions and Answers

what is the maximum dosage of Lipitor a 33 year old should be on?

I cannot answer your question directly. however I will share my experience. I was on Lipitor for several years and I did not like the side effects.
I stopped taking Lipitor and started taking Niacin which is one of the B vitamins.
Within a month or 3 my cholesterol and triglycerides were both in the normal range. I have been on Niacin for about 3 years now and it is still keeping every thing under control.
Should you decide to follow my route there are a couple of things to be aware of.
1. Only the straight Niacin does the job. Do not use Niacinamid, no flush Niacin or slow release Niacin.
2. Some people cannot take Niacin, they have an allergic reaction to it.
3. Niacin has a side effect that many people dislike, it causes a flush that lasts for a short time after taking the pill. However once a person is on Niacin for a week or so the flush reaction almost disappears.
To start taking Niacin, start out with a small dose, say 25 milligrams at a time. then gradgually build up the amount that you take.
Presently I take 500 to 1000 milligrams 3 times a day.
When I first started I worked up to 4000 mil per day.
I had been on Norvast for high blood pressure but it appears that Niacin also reduced my blood pressureto the point that my Dr. took me off Norvast and suggested that I reduce my Niacin intake to 3000 Mil per day.
Finally, may I suggest that you do a internet search on Niacin. There is lots of good info there.

Can Lipitor cause my hip flexor to be tight and painful?

I take the lowest dosage of lipitor - now for 6 months. I work out 2-3 days a week and my hip flexor is constantly tight and in pain on my right side (nothing wrong with my left side). I stretch it a lot but it still is tender constantly. Can this be a side effect of lipitor? Should I go off of it for a period to see if things change? If so, for how long. My doc thinks its probably unrelated and no bigee...Im male 40 years old. ANy thoughts on how to get rid of this problem appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know the answer to your question, and I'm not sure if anyone else here will.

Does anyone have frequent urination and bladder infections when taking 20 mgs of lipitor?

I never had a bladder infection before increasing my dosage of lipitor.

First you have to stop taking that garbage Lipitor. This drug is damaging your liver and that is the very thing you need healthy to produce the good bile that digests the fats you eat!

What a crock the drug companies have come up with. You get a high cholesterol problem and what do they do, they don't fix what is causing the problem, but create something that lowers the blood cholesterol, damages your liver, and makes you dependent on that drug forever. What a marketing scheme!

You need to fix the liver, gall bladder, and pancreas, eat good oils, eliminate the bad oils.

Eliminate all SOY products and all CANOLA OIL from your diet. These oils are terrible for you. They are genetically engineered now thanks to Monsanto and all their wisdom, will slow your thyroid down, inhibit mineral absorption and many other bad things.

Add olive oil, walnut oil, palm oil, grape seed extract oil, and especially coconut oil. Stop eating commercial beef you buy in a grocery store. This beef is most likely Angus Beef that has been grain fed. It contains huge amounts of inflammatory omega 6 fatty acids and throws your omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acid ratio in your body way off. Start eating only beef from grass fed cows. It is high in the good omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin K and E, CLA.

The frequent urination you are getting from the Lipitor is due to biofilms being created in your urinary track. This is a low grade infection that can lead to bladder cancer, etc. Don't go out and get an antibiotic to solve this, it will only make matters worse by giving you Candida that will really confuse things.

I also strongly suggest you get Betaine HCL + and activator to take with each meal. Avoid all antacids because this will cause all kinds of digestive issues you don't want to deal with. This will also kill the nanobacteria that causes heart disease.

A very good source of nutrients, like the ones suggested above is found at: www.healthline.cc (not .com) Great company with great products that really work.

good luck to you

Can Lipitor cause very bad fatigue and erectile dysfunction?

I have been on statin drugs for years, dosage slowly increased. Ten months ago was switched to Lipitor 80mg. Mild fatigue seemed to follow but for the past two months have been feeling constantly and seriously fatigued and having sexual dysfunction that is more than normal aging. A glass of wine with dinner makes the fatigue worse. I am very fit from lots of exercise (jogging and gym work).

go to your pharmacist counter and ask for an education sheet on Lipitor. After reading it go back to him with any questions. They often know more about meds than doctors. Best wishes and good health.
Consider the possibility of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Webmd.

Why does the instructions for Lipitor say "do not cut" the tablets?

My dosage has been reduced to half and i want to use up the ones I already have.

they are time release tablets, suggest that if your dose has been halved, take one of the old ones every other day until you use them up, do not cut them, or they can make you ill by flooding the system too quickly.

I take 1,000 mgs. of Niacin or Nicotinic Acid in place of Lipitor. Please comment on PROS and CONS on this.?

I used to take Lipitor and was on it for 3 years. Stopped on May 2006. Then Started taking Niacine 1,000 mgs. a day. 700 mgs. right after breakfast then 300 mgs for my last meal at 5:00 p.m.

Been on Niacin for the last 11 months now. I noticed that I steadily lost weight (no knowledge here if there is any connection with Niacin).

Am I doing it right with the dosage? Too high? Too low?

I heard that it could be detrimental to the liver or the kidneys?

You're doing just fine, stick with your current program. And yes, you can lose weight with Vitamin B3 because it helps burning carbs much easier.

Is Lipitor really as bad as blogs suggest?

High Cholesterol runs in my family and mine is up as well now, I was put on Lipitor and it worked within 3 weeks, I became "Normal" then i read all these posts on the net about Lipitor and thought Geez!! I'm gonna go off it and try all the healthy stuff, I went on Fish Oil, six 1500 dosages a day, I ate Salmon three times a week, plenty of veg etc, even Policosanol and Co-Enzyme Q10 now for six months and went to the doc yesterday for a blood test and my Cholesterol has gone up again, I couldn't believe it. The Doctor said that its in my genes cos my whole family has Cholesterol probs. He's obviously right, now he has prescribed me 20 mg Lipitor again, it worked last time so I'm sure it will work again but why do people say its bad for you? I virtually have no choice its either high Cholesterol or Lipitor? The so-called correct diet option doesn't work, neither dies the fish oil or any other supplement, cos I tried it. I know people on Liptor and they say they are Fine so why is there so much bad press? if there is a Doctor out there please tell me WHY??????

There are alarming stories out there about the Statins...I was wary of taking the Crestor I was prescribed too. Once I saw the amazing results though I stopped worrying. I havent had any bad side effects and if you havent either then I think you have no need to be worried. Trust your doctor and stay healthy. Go read some good stories about Lipitor then maybe you will feel more confident...your own good results should also help you feel more confident with it.

My total cholestrol is 133 but LDL is 144 & HDL is 40. Is this ok?

I take Lipitor 20 mg daily. Should I lower the dosage now.

Some number you have is wrong.

Your total cholesterol is at least 184 if LDL = 144 and HDL = 40.

Total cholesterol is LDL + HDL + 1/5 of Triglycerides.

More likely your total is 233, with triglycerides of (233-184)*5 = 49*5 = 245.

Niacin pin prickles. Bad? Worth it?

I was taking 1500 mg of Slo-Niacin a day on the advice of my nurse practitioner for cholesterol. Due to a rash, I reduced ithe time-released niacin to 1000 mg. After a month of that dosage, I stopped it, due to rash and skin tingling like pin pricks. I can't take Lipitor or Lescol XL due to extreme effects, like a bad case of flu & muscle achiness & dizziness, etc. I take fish oil capsules daily, and I have 1/4 cup flax seeds, which I grind and put into water with Crystal Light. I have cut out margarine and butter for the most part. I exercise pretty regularly. But I still have bad cholesterol numbers. I was hoping that niacin would help. But I am now off niacin completely. Is it bad for me, like the cholesterol RX's were?

Your NP could use a lesson in treatment of cholesterol. The only good long acting niacin product on the market @ this time is Niaspan. It is a pelleted form of immediate release niacin that is realeased over ~ 12 hours. Niacin is primarily used for treating hypertryglycidemia, elevations in triglycerides, not generally for elevated cholesterol. Slow release preparations of niacin have been shown to be potentially dangerous and may increase cardiovascular problems!
Niacin itself is a drug that you need to work up to the proper dose slowly, because the #1 reason for stopping it is flushing and itching. The usual starting dose of Niaspan is only 500 mgs and it is suggested that you stay on it until all flushing stops. It is also suggested that you take Ibuprofen or benedryl about 15 minutes before you take the niacin, in order to stop flushing. It is also recommended that you take it at bedtime so that the flushing will occur while you are sleeping.
There are several anti-cholesterol medications that may help that are unrelated to lipitor and lescol. Zetia is one of them, and it works by reducing absorption of cholesterol from the GI tract.
There is a super concentrated form of fish oil called Omacor that has also been shown to be of benefit in reducing cholesterol. The daily dose of Omacor is 800 mg. twice daily and is equivalent to taking 12-14 fish oil caplets at a time.
Plant sterols and stanols have been shown to help lower cholesterol in low doses, but can cause a stanol overdose syndrome if overdone, So the dose is 1 or 2 tablets twice a day. Use Cholest-off by Nature Made!
It is not recommended that you stop Niacin the way you did, because to restart it, you will have to endure several days of flushing.
Niacin can have side effects of elevating your Uric Acid levels which can lead to Gout. It can also elevate you blood sugar and cause a syndrome indistinguishable from type 2 diabetes mellitus, therefore your NP should monitor both your blood glucose and uric acid levels as well as your kidney function.
The prime goal in lowering your cholesterol is to get your LDL cholesterol below 70 (new value) or 100 (old value). You should increase your HDL to over 55 and preferably over 60. This can be done by exercising, not smoking, and being female.
Your total cholesterol should be below 130 (new value) and 150 (old value). Tryglycerides (circulating fats) should be below 150.
There is some evidence that triglycerides are nearly as important as cholesterol in developing vascular disease and should be treated aggressively if necessary. Besides niacin, a drug called Tricor has been used to treat this.
Exercise, Diet and Weight Loss are also important factors in controlling triglycerides and cholesterol. Do not smoke as this raises your bad cholesterol (LDL and VLDL) levels and lowers your good cholesterol levels (HDL).
There are some familial diseases known as hyperlipidemias which are inherited problems with handling cholesterol and/or triglycerides that may make you problem worse if you have one of them.
I suggest you sit down, talk to your NP and have her explain exactly what your condition is and ask why you are on Niacin and not Niaspan and ask what her plans are with you. Also I feel that you should begin Omacor and Zetia if necessary to lower cholesterol and Tricor if necessary to lower triglycerides.
Flax seeds are good unless you have diverticulosis. Margarine is probably not safe at all, stick with olive oil, peanut oil, canola oil, and other monosaturated oils or small amounts of butter
Good Luck
