Will Lipitor ever be available in a generic form? I do know that there is a period of time that has to pass.?

I am curious as to know when will Lipitor be available in the generic form? I know that a number of years must pass after the patent. Hasn't the appropriate number of years passed already? Or is it just greed on the part of the big Drug Companies trying to squeeze the consumer even further, especially the way the economy is now. It is ashame that the big drug companies are so greedy. Thank you

I believe I heard that Lipitor will go off patent in a year or two in the U.S.. Crestor has two or three years to go

When will a generic be available for Lipitor in the US?

I heard Canada already has a generic for Lipitor.

Sorry I don't have an answer to your question about generic Lipitor.

Researchers are now finding a link between stantin's and ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and Alzheimer's. John's Hopkins and Mayo Clinic, as well as other major hospitals, are now replacing stantins with 2000 - 3000 mg of Vitamin C daily.

High Cholesterol is not, in and of itself, a disease. It is an indicator of increased risk for heart disease.

My Internal Medicine doctor wanted me to take a stantin for elevated, not high, cholesterol because of other health issues and I refused to get the prescription filled. He is impressed with my results using Omega 3 Fish Oil (1000 mg 2X daily), Complex B-vitamin, and Vitamin-C (1000 mg 2X daily).

Please take the time to read the articles I've linked below. The information can save you a lot of problems in the future.

Does anyone know when generic Lipitor is to become available ?

Lipitor should be generic by 2008....if you're concerned about the cost of the drug consider switching to Zocor which has just gone generic, Simvastatin. They are both statins and both for cholesterol....ask your doc about switching,maybe..?

Is there a generic substitute for Lipitor?

I started drinking a super juice called Vitalagy and I am now off of my cholesterol medicine and my blood pressure is back to normal as well

Hope this is helpful

Are there other drugs in the Benicar & Lipitor class that are generic?

Benicar (olmesartan) is in the class of angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB's). They are used for hypertension. The only generic available I believe is Cozaar (losartan).

Generally these drugs are interchangeable and can be titrated to effect.

As for Lipitor (atorvastatin) the only generic is Mevacor (lovastatin). Zocor (simvastatin) and Pravachol (pravastatin) generics have just been approved by the FDA (June 23, 2006 and April 24, 2006 respectively).

There ARE differences though among "statins" as to their potency. Lipitor is one of the strongest statins while Mevacor was the first one out there and also the weakest. Zocor is a middleweight. Pravachol is kind of between Zocor and Mevacor. Of course, you have dose limits so you cannot just keep taking more and more Mevacor to get the same activity as Lipitor.

See the following chart for a comparison.

Good luck. Generics do save consumers and the health-care system a lot of money.

Is generic lipitor available in the United States?

Generic Lipitor (atorvastatin) is not available at this time. Pfizer, Lipitor's manufacturer, secured a basic patent for the drug in October 1999 which gave them exclusive rights for producing the drug. Drug patents last anywhere between 5-14 years and manufacturers often have more than one type of patent on any given drug. There was some controversy over some of Pfizer's patents on Lipitor, but it was decided that the patents will not expire until March of 2010 at the earliest. So don't expect to see generic Lipitor at your local pharmacy anytime soon.

going from Lipitor to generic Zocor?

My insurance will no longer pay for Lipitor, so I had to go on Zocor(generic). I was on 5mg of Lipitor and am now on 10mg of Zocor.
They are 2 different drugs, so is that the equivalent? Or is there really no way to compare the two.
