Fetal Risk Summary
The Food and Drug Administration mandated deletion of pregnancy-related indications from all progestins because of a possible association with congenital anomalies. No reports linking the use of lynestrenol with congenital defects have been located (see Hydroxyprogesterone, Norethynodrel, Norethindrone, Medroxyprogesterone, Ethisterone). One Reference cited 16 women who had used lynestrenol for contraception and gave birth to normal infants following cessation of treatment (1). No conclusions can be made from this report. Use of progestogens during pregnancy is not recommended.
