In an FDA surveillance study of Michigan Medicaid recipients involving 229,101 completed pregnancies conducted between 1985 and 1992, 13 newborns had been exposed to isosorbide during the 1st trimester (F. Rosa, personal communication, FDA, 1993). No major birth defects were observed (0.6 expected).

Questions and Answers

Exactly what is Isosorbide Mononitrate used for?, The cardiologist said every thing looked normal on the different tests so why this medication plus have nitro pills on hand

Isosorbide mononitrate reduces angina by dilating both the veins and the arteries.

Isosorbide mononitrate also increases supply of oxygen to the heart by dilating the arteries which supply the heart itself. Isosorbide mononitrate is in the class of drugs called anti-anginal medications.

Can I Take graprfruit/grapefruit juice whilst taking Imdur (similar to Isosorbide mononitrate)?, I understand that whilst taking Beta blockers, one cannot ingest grapefruit/grapefruit juice, as the combination could lead to a serious interraction. But is it ok to take grapefruit whilst on Imdur? its a similar drug to Isosorbide mononitrate but does not have such a significant effect of hypotension (low blood pressure)

I take a Beta Blocker and as far as I'm aware its okay to take grapefruit. The one that you cant take the fruit with are certain statins.
There are no restrictions for taking with Imdur. If in doubt check with the pharmacist.

anyone have this medication after heart stent?, isosorbide mononitrate was prescribed to me for twice daily after i had a stent placed in me. side effects are headache, nausea, dizziness. i have not had chest pains after the procedure. i want to stop taking, but am advised by nurse, symptoms will subside. has anyone been through this and have they stopped taking this medicine on their own? is it really necessary after a procedure? i was told i still have other areas with blockage, and would be treated with medication. any help would be appreciated. i meet with my heart specialist in 6 days.

The only medications they had me taking after getting 2 stents in my heart, were Plavix and Crestor. I had to take them for 12 months and then they took me off of them because everything was good. I never had any heart pains after the stents, but many people have them afterwards, sometimes for several months.. Do what your doctor recommends,...don't try to self medicate or second guess your doctor....
