Q&A about Iodine

Iodine????
My diet currently consists of yogurt and either a pear or banana for breakfast with my one a day weightsmart vitamin, then slimfast for lunch, with usually a salad, protein shake, and cottage cheese for dinner. The problem is the weightsmart vitamin doesny have iodine like most others, the slim fast only has 35 percent of the daily value. Am i getting the iodine i need or should i stop the wieghtsmart diet and buy one with iodine. Or are there iodine supplements?

I'm concerned that you're not taking in enough calories, actually. If your calorie intake falls too low, your body will shut down, your metabolism will tank, and you'll start surviving by cannibalizing your own muscles. Really, you need to consult someone about this, or you could harm your body.

I think salt has iodine, you can salt your food.

What is the difference between iodide and iodine?
I know that iodine comes as I2 when it is by itself. Can someone please explain if that would be called iodine gas, iodide gas, iodine, or just iodide?

I'm a bit confused...

Thanks!
Ellie
Hi,

I think that iodide is an ion, i.e. it has reacted with a metal so it has gained electrons and is now a negative ion.

Where as, iodine is just a neutral atom.

How is iodine collected from the ashes of seaweeds?
I learned in our general chem class that iodine is liberated from seaweeds by the action of sulfuric acid on the ash of the seaweeds. But, how is the iodine collected from the ashes?

I tried searching for some answers but I still can't quite get it. I hope someone here can help clear it up for me. :) Thanks. :)
Mike W
I think that it is vaporized off and then collected as a solid in a colder part of the equipment. I2 has a high vapor pressure and readily goes to the vapor phase, but condenses as I2 crystals

What properties of radioactive isotopes make iodine useful?
Original question: Of the elements, oxgen, zinc, and iodine, which is likely to be a poo conductor of electricity and a brittle solid at room temperature? What properties of radioactive isotopes make them useful?
PhatPhel...
radioactivity is a useful way to track the atoms in the body in experiements so you can see where they go...isotopes are also useful cuz they have that slight difference in mass number that can be used to identify and differentiate between things to figure out where they end up

How can someone be allergic to Iodine if it is an integral element in Thyroid hormones?
I'm a student in Medicine and was recently caught in a heavy debate regarding Iodine allergy. Allergy implies that one reacts with Mast cell mobilization, Histamine etc once the antigen is introduced into the tissue/bloodstream. Conversely Iodine is an essential element for the formation of Tetra-iodothyronine and Tri-iodothyronine, also known as T4 and T3 respectively. These hormones are essential to normal metabolic function and regulation. Is there perhaps another underlying antigen present in food rich in iodine, such as shellfish, seaweed etc?

Here's a link about iodine allergy and the use of contrast materials in radiology, very informative:

Why does iodine have a higher melting and boiling point than water and methane?
For iodine: Boiling point: 184

Melting point: 114

For water: Boiling point: 100

Melting point: 0

For methane: Boiling point: -161.5

Melting point: -182.5

How come there is such a large difference when all of them are simple molecular structures? I would appreciate it if anyone can explain it to me. Thnx in advance.
Carboran...
iodine is a diatomic element, so the molecular weight is 126.9*2 = 253.8, it is very heavy. it has a polarized electron cloud, so the London forces between iodine (I2) molecules are much stronger than in many compounds. the molecular weight of water is only 18.1, the intermolecular forces that gives it such a high boiling point are hydrogen bonds.

so, the question should ask why water has such a high boiling point, not why iodine has high boiling point. consider the molecular weight, the boiling point of iodine is actually quite low.

methane is light, it is also nonpolar, that's why it boils at a very low temperature.

What does iodine and shellfish have in common?
If someone asks you if you have an allergy to iodine and they dont know they will ask if its ok for you to eat shellfish.
najib qadir
Common questions in healthcare. The answer is that shellfish collect iodine and hold onto it like a sponge holds water. Until iodized salt came around, those folks in the midwest, far from any salt-water shellfish, had problems with not having enough iodine in their diet, so they would end up with goiters. If you eat shellfish, you'll get the same reaction to medical iodine.

What are the effects of iodine on someone who has had their Thyroid killed or removed?
I know you are not suppose to have anything with iodine in it, crustaceans, etc. after the removal of a thyroid. I am interested in what actually happens if someone ingests iodine or has it used as a topical cleaner for a wound. How toxic is it? Since iodine is in a lot of our foods, is it only in excess that someone will be effected? Can you have an iodine build up over time that would create problems? or is the excess eventually a waste product and naturally removed from the body? Are there any signs or symptoms that would show if someone had ingested or had a reaction to iodine?
cmary
You can still have iodine after a thyroid is removed. Often people will go on a low iodine diet before having radioactive iodine, which is usually done after thyroid surgery for thyroid cancer and also instead of surgery for people with hyperthyroidism.

Even in that case the iodine doesn't do any harm to the person. Thyroid cells take in iodine so by "starving" them of iodine by going on the low iodine diet they'll take in more of the radioactive iodine, which then kills the cells.

What happens when Vitamin C is added to an iodine and starch solution?
It's a grade 10 high school chemistry question :)

As you may already know, an iodine and starch solution is an aqueous solution with a dark violet/black color. But when you add vitamin C to the solution, what happens? Can you provide a lengthy explanation for me? Tomorrow, I'm doing an experiment which tests the levels of vitamin C in different substances, but all I need to know for now is what will happen.
Paul B
Vitamin C. reacts with iodine:

C6H8O6 + I2 ==> C6H6O6 + 2H+ + 2 I-

So you can use titration with iodine to find out the concentration of vitamin C. Since the reaction ratio is 1:1, moles vitamin = moles I2 at the endpoint, so concentrations (M) x volumes are also equal. The reasoning is a bit like in acid-base titrations, which you might have met.

The suspended starch forms a dark blue loosely held complex (almost a solid state solution) with I2, so long as there is any, so it acts as an indicator.

How do you find Moles of added Iodine from Titration?
I performed titration with vitamin C and I2. I am having problems in setting up the calculation for moles of iodine added. I used 2.525g vitamen tablet and 10.13 mL of iodine.

Thanks in advance.
Janel M
You need to know the concentration of titrant (I2). If you know the concentration in mol/L you can find the mol of iodine added by multiplying the concentration by the L added which is 0.01013L.
