Name: RAMIPRIL
Class: Antihypertensive
Risk Factor: CM*
Fetal Risk Summary
Ramipril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. Reproduction studies in rats, rabbits, and monkeys at doses 400, 2, and 400 times, respectively, the recommended human dose on a body surface area basis revealed no teratogenic effects (1).
No reports of the use of this agent in human pregnancy have been located, but this class of drugs should be used with caution, if at all, during gestation. Use of ACE inhibitors limited to the 1st trimester does not appear to present a significant risk to the fetus, but fetal exposure after this time has been associated with teratogenicity and severe toxicity in the fetus and newborn, including death. See Captopril or Enalapril for a summary of fetal and neonatal effects from these agents.
[*Risk Factor DM if used in 2nd or 3rd trimesters.]
Breast Feeding Summary
No reports describing the use of ramipril during lactation have been located. The molecular weight (about 417) is low enough, however, that excretion into breast milk should be expected. Other ACE inhibitors are excreted into breast milk, but the American Academy of Pediatrics considers them compatible with breast feeding (see Captopril and Enalapril).

Q&A about Ramipril
I'm writing a report on ramipril and I need to know the source of the compound. Is it a natural compound or manufactured? What environment does it come from? I know that Kings pharaceuticals manufactures Altace but it doesnt say the process of how its made. Does anyone know a good link to get this information?
The synthesis was first described by Volker Teetz, and I have provided the articles below:
Title: Synthesis of Unnatural Amino-Acids - (S,S,S)-2-azabicyclo[3.3.0]octane-3-
carboxylic acid
Author: V Teetz, et al.
Published: Tetrahedron Letters [0040-4039] yr:1984 vol:25 iss:40 pg:4479-4482
Another good article that outlines the entire synthesis of ramipril:
Title: Synthesis of a Highly Active Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme-Inhibitor - 2-[N-[(S)-1-ethoxycarbonyl-3-
phenylpropyl]-L-alanyl]-(1S,3S,5S)-2-
azabicyclo[3.3.0]octane-3-carboxylic acid
Author: V Teetz, et al
Published: Arzneimittel Forschung [0004-4172] yr:1984 vol:34-2 iss:10B pg:1399 -1401
These two articles are going to be your best source. I also located a new synthesis that was recently patented. You can find it here: http://www.wipo.int/pctdb/en/wo.jsp?wo=2...
Hope this helps.
I have severe side effects from the three medications above. First a very sore throat than aching ears, jaws and headache, trouble breathing, consistent dry cough and trouble swallowing liquids. Doctor cannot find what the symptoms are so he gets me to use antibiotics. I started taking applecider vinegar to-day as a start to get off these drugs, am I ok?
Apparently the above combination of antihypertensives are contraindicated, does any1 know why?
"Altace- Brand Name. Ramipril- Generic. Altace is used in the treatment of high blood pressure. It is effective when used alone or in combination with other high blood pressure medications, especially thiazide-type water pills (diuretics). Altace works by preventing the conversion of a chemical in your blood called angiotensin1 into a more potent substance that increases salt & water retention in your body. It also enhances the blood flow in your circulatory system. It is a member of the group of drugs called ACE inhibutors.
Altace is also prescribed for people who show signs of congestive heart failure after a heart attack. It helps prevent the condition from getting worse."
Aldactone- Brand Name. Spironolactone- Generic.
"Aldactone flushes excess salt and water from the body and controls high blood pressure. It is used in the diagnosis & treatment of hyperaldoste-blood pressure. It is used in the diagnosis and treatment of hyperaldosteronism, a condition in which the adrenal gland secretes too much aldosterone (a hormone that regulates the body's salt and potassium levels). It is also used in treating other conditions that require the elimination of excess fluid from the body. These conditions include congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney disease, & unusually low potassium levels in the blood. When used for high blood pressure, Aldactone can be taken alone or with other high blood pressure medications."
As you can read above, these medicines are extremely similar. They would require monitoring that would produce extreme risks and possible high complications for the patient. I hope this helps.
My doctor has quoted one research paper to me. I would like to know about that one and whether it follows the general trend.
If this doesn't bring up what you're looking for, try using Google Scholar to find some papers. This is easier to use, but doesn't always find the best, most relevant papers.
Try seraching for 'ramipril clinical trial'. I would try the Cochrane library first, as it analyses all the available papers on the topic, so is easiest to understand.
Is it advised or not?
I am on Propranolol and by GP has added Ramipril as well, 2 to be taken at night. My blood pressure is 160/90
I take ramipril capsules and ciprofibrate for cholesteral
My mother did, came off them, but the coughing fits continued
Another possibility, in some patients, gastric reflux can present as cough.
She should talk with her doctor.
I have been taking them for just over two weeks for high blood pressure and now I get this strange feeling in my heart.
I've just learned that its one of the most abused drugs from browsing the web. Is this true? She's always taking them now.
Shes taken them since she had a heart attack, but she just keeps them putting them in her mouth.
I believe it is used to lower blood pressure. Is this true?
Please help.
