BETEL

 Chapter: Entheogens

AKA: Areca catechu, areca nut, betel nut, ping lang, supari.

A favorite stimulant for thousands of years, it is still one of the most widely used drugs in the world, as popular in Asia as tobacco is in the West.

Effects: The stimulant is the alkaloid arecoline, which increases energy, elevates mood, and acts as an aphrodisiac, though this last effect may just may be an indirect result of the first two. The arecoline that is swallowed can rid the body of some intestinal parasites.

Precautions: Constant use will stain the teeth, mouth, and gums a dark red or black. An overdose can weaken the sex drive and create other unwanted side effects. Ingesting too much arecoline, or betel that is not yet ripe, can result in a feeling of drunkenness, followed by dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, and possibly convulsions.

Dosage: A slice of betel nut is mixed with part of a leaf from the Piper betel vine and a piece of lime, plus cloves, nutmeg, tamarind, turmeric, cardamom, and sometimes resins, then placed in the mouth and chewed or sucked on for hours.

Where to source Betel nuts in Australia?, I'm looking to find Betel Nuts in Australia - or more specifically QLD but anywhere in Oz is fine - have found where to source the palm tree itself - however these can take 4 - 7 years to flower - any help would be greatly appreciated.... Thanks

These are not cheap, if you are looking to simply chew them. It might be more to your advantage to go ahead and buy that tree (or a couple of them) and get them growing rather than buy the seeds... but here is the link I found:

You may have to order it from overseas:

What's your opinion of the Bing Lang Si Shih (young female sale betel nuts) in TW?, Have you ever buy betel nuts from the young girls who wore sexy clothing on the street in Taiwan?
How was taste of that? It makes mouth red looks like blood.
How do you think of them (girls)?
Have you culture shock for it?

I have to say I feel kind of sorry for them. I don't think most of them have very bright futures if they're selling bing lang via their physiques at such young ages. I'm guessing some of them eventually just sell their physiques instead of the bing lang. I hope I'm wrong.

I dont ever eat it - i was kind of coaxed into eating it and felt it would be easy just to take a little bit! PEER PRESSURE I KNOW!!!

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!! One time use of betel nut is okay, it's long term use that causes problems. However, I strongly recommend that you confirm this with your Ob/Gyn and please no more betel nut! It's not worth the risk & not recommended during pregnancy. Enjoy the journey & the experience!

. What have been the social, economic, and health consequences of the shift from the use of Betel and Kava to?,

with westernization/modernization betel kava is now confined to the lower socio-econ class who have nothing else to distract their lives during their leisure hours. what better way to soothe the mind than the betel. in some countries the industry is still striving but consumption has been plateau-ing. the link to cancer has also detered others from partaking it.
