Fetal Risk Summary

Gatifloxacin is a synthetic, broad-spectrum, fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent. It is in the same antiinfective class as ciprofloxacin, enoxacin, lomefloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, sparfloxacin, and trovafloxacin. Gatifloxacin is available in both oral and injectable formulations (1).

In reproduction studies with rats and rabbits, oral doses up to 0.7 and 1.9 times the maximum human dose based on exposure determined by the area under the plasma concentration curve (MHD), respectively, were not teratogenic (1). Rat fetal toxicity (delayed skeletal ossification, including wavy ribs) was noted at doses (0.7 times the MHD, and skeletal malformations occurred at about 1.0 times the MHD. Additional evidence of rat fetal toxicity, at doses 1.0 times the MHD given late in pregnancy and continuing during lactation, included increases in postimplantation loss and neonatal and perinatal death. No adverse fetal effects were seen at doses of 0.2 and 1.9 times the MHD, respectively, in rats or rabbits. No adverse effects on fertility or reproduction were observed in rats at oral doses up to about 1.0 times the MHD (1).

It is not known if gatifloxacin crosses the human placenta. The molecular weight of the hydrate (about 402) is low enough that transfer to the fetus should be expected.

No reports describing the use of either the IV or oral forms of gatifloxacin during human pregnancy have been located. The animal toxicity observed at doses equivalent to the maximum human exposure should be considered before this antiinfective is used in pregnant women. Moreover, some reviewers have concluded that all fluoroquinolones should be considered contraindicated in pregnancy (e.g., Ciprofloxacin and Norfloxacin), because safer alternatives are usually available.

Breast Feeding Summary

No reports describing the use of gatifloxacin in human lactation have been located. The molecular weight (about 402 for the hydrated form) suggests that the agent will be excreted into breast milk. Gatifloxacin is excreted in the milk of lactating rats (1). The effects of this exposure on a nursing infant are unknown. Because of the potential for serious adverse effects, women taking gatifloxacin should probably not breast feed.

Questions and Answers

gatifloxacin?, I am diabetic.I took gatifloxacin 400mg 2 tablets per day for two days. The first day i went into hypoglicimia with my sugar reading dropping to 50.and on the third day i had hyperglicimia with the sugar reading crossing 600.Now I am on Insulin.Iwnat to know will there be any permanent damage. Will I have to take Insulin for life. How long will it take me to get back to normal.Iam very careful with my diet medication and my sugar in last 25 yearsnever crossed 200

The manufacturers of Tequin (gatifloxacin) sent out a letter to doctors in Feb 2006 letting them know that even in non-diabetic persons, that hypergycemia and hypoglycemia could occur. As far as damage to you body, only your doctor can answer that. You need to talk to him, if you think the Tequin was the cause of your eratic sugar. Typically once a diabetic is on insulin, its for life.

Has anyone had to put Zymar (gatifloxacin) in their pets eye(s)?, One of my cat's eyes is half shut and it has a yellow discharge (puss). I am wondering if it's ok to put Zymar (antibiotic eye drops) in his eye until I cant get him to the vet.

Serious answers only please. Thank-you.

Hi there... medications prescribed - or any over the counter products - for humans can be lethal for pet animals unless prescribed specifically by a veterinarian. Zymar can cause blindness in pet animals and cause serious lethal consequences.

Antibiotics (Gatifloxacin) & Alcohol?, I have recurrent throat infections/strep throat. Keflex usually works but this time around it did not so my doc put me on Augmentin 625 for 10 days. That didn't do anything either so today he moved me to Gatifloxacin 400 once a day.

Well, it's Saturday & there's a party around the bend.Would it hurt if I had one or two drinks? I'm not burning up with fever or anything & have avoided all social get togethers for over 2 weks now because of the damn antibiotics.

NO , NO ,

Has anyone ever taken Tequin (Gatifloxacin)?, It's an antibiotic given to me for bronchitis. I read the info on it and has a lot of side effects, some possibly dangerous, like high or low blood sugar even if you're not diabetic. It makes me feel ill. I wonder what others' experiences have been. I'm thinking of throwing it out. But it's the second one they've given me as the first one they gave me made me sick too.

i was prescribed tequin once and it made me drowsy and nausead alot . things were happening to me that had never happen so i told my doctor i need someother antibiotic . it was changed too . please don't take it if it is making you sick . it's your right to tell the doctor you need something else . e-mail me if you want to for more info .

is gatifloxacin (tequin) prescribed in enteric fever with what dosage. reply to busylife_easydose@yahoo.com.?,

i dont think gatifloxacin is prescribed to enteric fever as gatifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone with more gram positive coverage.hence it helps in upper respiratory and other infections better.ciprofloxacin is prescribed for enteric fever more often in the dose of 500mg three times daily.

Please advice a medicin or help consultation?, Please give consultation. Is the report is good or something else.

Eye gets red and irritation? Suggest pls.?, My Right eye get swollen for 2-3 days and it happens every 2-3 month a time, i met eye specialist . he says it is like flu n fever of body. just habitual.. i have specks number is minus -10 number . it happening from last 3 years. i take Ciprofloxacin and gatifloxacin two times a day for 3 days.. and it vanishes on third day every time..pls help What should i do. It makes my 2-3 days of life worst ??

You could be getting habitual styes.

Whenever you feel the swelling is about to occur, put a hot compress on your eye for a half an hour. I generally use tea bags when ever I get styes. If you continue that, the swelling should diminish in 3-4 hours, rather than 3 days. The sooner you catch it and put the hot compress on, the quicker it will go away. So if you start the hot compresses towards the end of the day, it still may not go away till 3 days. I always start it immediately, even if I am not sure if my eye is going to swell...but I have a little idea.

ihave been infected with staph while working in a research lab.how will i get cured?, it first started as erythematous rashes on arms and shoulders, hair follicullites which seems like a minor thing the gradually i developed back and joint pain and pneumonia.iwent to the doctor and he prescribed me gatifloxacin 400mg. for 5 days. it gave me relief from rashes and hair follicullites but joint pains persisted.after 10-12 days all the symptoms reappeared.again i took another course of the same antibiotic.the results were similar and again the infection appeared after 10 days.then i took the same antibiotic for 21 days ,this time there was no relief at all. then i tried homeopathy i cant find any improvement. further my family members are compaining of slight joint pain and3 of them had pneumonia ,1 had severe boils.what should i do?

well i guess it depends on the staph infection. is it MRSA? because that form is not killed by antibiotics.
