Fetal Risk Summary
Doxazosin is a peripherally acting a1-adrenergic blocking agent used in the treatment of hypertension. No adverse fetal effects were observed when pregnant rats and rabbits were given oral doses 4 and 10 times the human serum levels achieved with a 12 mg/day therapeutic dose (HD), respectively (1). However, reduced fetal survival occurred in rabbits dosed at 20 times the HD and delayed postnatal development was observed in rat pups whose mothers were given doses 8 times the HD during the perinatal and postnatal periods (1). Doxazosin crosses the placenta in rats (1).
No reports describing the use of doxazosin in human pregnancy have been located.
Breast Feeding Summary
Doxazosin is concentrated in the milk of lactating rats given a single oral dose of 1 mg/kg with peak levels about 20 times those achieved in the maternal serum (1). No reports describing the use of doxazosin during human lactation have been located. However, the presence and possible accumulation in human milk should be anticipated based on the animal study.

Questions and Answers
Is Doxazosin exactly the same compound as Doxazosin Mesylate? Pharmacy filled with #1, when asked for #2.?, My husband had a prescription for Doxazosin Mesylate, generic for Cardura, but the pharmacy filled it for Doxazosin. Is this the same thing?
Once the strength of the two are the same, they are bioequivalent, so you don't need to worry. They are essentially the same.
Does doxazosin cause birth defects?, If so, what kind? Also, what could be substituted for it?
It is a category B drug which means it should be relatively safe in moderation. (Tylenol and Tums are also category B if that puts it into perspective for you). The only information I could find on birth defects with it said this:
-High doses in pregnancy cause delayed postnatal development in animals.
-Inadequate human studies.
Definitely check with your doctor about taking ANY meds while pregnant, but I wouldn't freak out about this one.
Did they send me home with useless medication?, so I got a kidney stone with real bad pain and they sent me home with doxazosin mesylate..metoclopramide and ibuprofen..from what i can look up thats bld pressure pills, anti nausea pills and some useless painkillers.
I had to go back to hospital and they gave me morphine and that barely helped with the pain. Am I wrong or did they send me home with a whole bunch of stupid pills in the first place.
Sounds like they did.....
If you are passing a kidney stone (I answered your other Q.) you need major pain killers. (Painkillers are not an automatic addiction-they do serve a purpose, just make sure you use them to your Dr.'s directions)
I would DEMAND something stronger, at least vicodin or percocet.
Best of luck again!
im on blood pressure tabs..diovan160mg and doxazosin 4mg.. ive lost my sex drive. and cant get an solid erect?, got told its the tabs im 50 and had a high sex drive
My husband had a heart attack last June, he is only 40. His doctor put him on blood pressure pills and he had the same problem as you because of it. He could get an erection but it went away. Once his blood pressure stabilized, his body got used to having lower blood pressure, his erections are almost 100% back to normal. This was a big problem for him, having a very high sex drive and all. Before his body got used to a lower bp his doctor gave him Viagra. We used to laugh about it before his heart attack, but not anymore. If taking a pill could restore his sex life, then he was willing to take the thing. He figured who would know anyway. It wasn't his fault that he had this problem and nothing he could do about it. After he got over the shame our sex life returned to normal. Just something for you to think about and maybe discuss with your doctor.
Is Diovan a good high blood pressure medication?, I know of a person who was taking Diovan and the doctor kept increasing the dose until he had her at the maximum dose. Still her blood pressure was high. So the doctor added doxazosin and her blood pressure came down. My friend said the Diovan made her feel weak so she quit taking it and the doxazosin seems to be keeping the blood pressure down by itself. Does Diovan do anything?
You have to love people who answer when they have no idea what they're talking about...
It is a good med. Not all meds for high BP work well for every patient. Never stop taking a BP med without consulting your doctor.
i have heard that if you eat or drink grape fruit this can have side affects when taking certain prescription?, my sister has been prescribed Doxazosin,& Amlodipine for high blood pressure, she has grapefruit almost every morning, can this have any side affects with her medication
Drinking grapefruit juice whilst taking calcium channel blockers can lead to low blood pressure, increased heart rate, dizziness, flushing and headaches.
Whether or not you can drink grapefruit juice without experiencing these effects depends very much upon you as an individual. One person might be affected in a very different way to another, even though they are on the same dose of calcium channel blockers and drinking the same amount of grapefruit juice.
The reaction depends not only on the dose and on the individual, but also on whether you are a regular, long-term grapefruit juice drinker.
ranitidine 150mg 2x a day I failed a drug test i dont get high nor drink i was told that the test reading?, i was told it was amphetamines i also take doxazosin
It was more than likely the doxazosin that caused the false positive, I had a drug test come up positive, all I had to do was have my pharmacy print a list of medications I was on.
I am going touring europe for 6mths how do I go on about my perscriptions I am over 60yrs?, I have 4 items Doxazosin,Simvastatin,Amlodipine & Furosemide
You could talk to your dr, and they should give you a supply for the time you are away. You MUST have your EIHC card, and carry a list of the medicines you are on so that you can get more if necessary, my wife brought a 3 month supply of her meds out here to Spain when we moved, just asked the Dr and he gave her them, by the time she needed more we were registered with the Spanish health service.
