Name: DESIPRAMINE
Class: Antidepressant
Risk Factor: C
Fetal Risk Summary
Desipramine is an active metabolite of imipramine (see also Imipramine). No reports linking the use of desipramine with congenital defects have been located. Neonatal withdrawal symptoms, including cyanosis, tachycardia, diaphoresis, and weight loss, were observed after desipramine was taken throughout pregnancy (1).
In a surveillance study of Michigan Medicaid recipients involving 229,101 completed pregnancies conducted between 1985 and 1992, 31 newborns had been exposed to desipramine during the 1st trimester (F. Rosa, personal communication, FDA, 1993). One (3.2%) major birth defect was observed (one expected). No anomalies were observed in six defect categories (cardiovascular defects, oral clefts, spina bifida, polydactyly, limb reduction defects, and hypospadias) for which specific data were available. The number of exposures is too small for comment.
In an in vitro study, desipramine was shown to be a potent inhibitor of sperm motility (2). A concentration of 27 µmol/L produced a 50% reduction in motility.
Breast Feeding Summary
Desipramine is excreted into breast milk (3,4 and 5). No reports of adverse effects have been located. In one patient, milk:plasma ratios of 0.4–0.9 were measured with milk levels ranging between 17 and 35 µg/mL (3). A 35-year-old mother in her 9th postpartum week took 300 mg of desipramine daily at bedtime for depression (5). One week later, simultaneous milk and serum samples were collected about 9 hours after a dose. Concentrations of desipramine in the milk and serum were 316 and 257 ng/mL (ratio 1.2), respectively, whereas levels of the metabolite, 2-hydroxydesipramine, were 381 and 234 ng/mL (ratio 1.6), respectively. The measurements were repeated 1 week later, 10.33 hours after the dose, and milk levels of the parent drug and metabolite were 328 and 327 ng/mL, respectively. No drug was detected in the infant's serum, nor were any clinical signs of toxicity observed in the infant after 3 weeks of maternal treatment. The American Academy of Pediatrics classifies desipramine as an agent whose effect on the nursing infant is unknown but may be of concern (6).

Q&A about Desipramine
i currently take prozac, xanex, wellbutrin, and zyprexa. it doesn't seem to be working as well as it used to. i've been on it for 7 years. i want desperately to lose weight and zyprexa won't let me do this.
You're taking two different antidepressants.
Zyprexa suppresses dopamine so that you can't feel how unhappy you are. You also can't feel that "sated" feeling you get from a sensible meal, and that's part of why you put on so much weight.
This is not medical advice. What does your doctor say about all this?
I have tried several times but feel like crap. how long does this last?
you don't want to just stop taking it; i know that it is always better to "wean" yourself off of these drugs that mess with the chemicals in your brain.
the withdrawal is less severe & uncomfortable.
withdrawal lasts about 10 days in duration.
i take paxil and desipramine but i like to have a few drinks once in awhile....anything i should be concerned about?
I went to see a psychiatrist for anxiety. He had me admitted to a mental hospital where they told me that I have "split personality disorder"
They put me on:
Thorazine
Compazine
Stellazine
Mellaril
Navane
Trilafon
Haldol
Loxitane
Prolixin
Risperdal
Elavil
Tofranil (Imipramine)
Desipramine
Ludiomil
Desyrel(Trazadone)
Parnate
Norpramine
Sinequan
Lithium
Seroquel
Effexor
They kept me in the hospital for eight months. I still have anxiety. And I am still not sure what "split personality disorder" is.
What a waste.
I am a 38-year-old female who suffers from chronic fatigue that I think is yeast related (candida). I am looking for a doctor who has had success in treating people like me. I am insured through UnitedHealthcare. Thank you!For the last 14+ years, I’ve experienced extreme fatigue, body aches (burning in my arms and legs), poor circulation, urinary tract infections, memory loss, ADD, mood swings, thrush, breast yeast infection (while nursing), vaginal yeast infections, had my gallbladder removed, having tonsils removed. Blood tests are normal, been to a ton of different doctors. They say chronic fatigue, since there is no other diagnosis. Symptoms worsening. Already taking Prozac, Desipramine (migraine prevention), Strattera, fish oil, B6, multivitamin, calcium, clonzapem (anxiety prn), feogen (anemia). I am young and should be enjoying my children. I’m not obese either, yet I am exhausted by everything. Help! Ask questions and I will gladly reply. Thank you!
Dip a tampon in plain yogurt (curd, yoghurt) containing Lactobacillus acidophilus, and insert into the vagina twice a day until your symptoms clear up. Repeat this until one day after the symptoms disappear.
Peel a fresh clove of garlic and make a little tampon by wrapping it in cheesecloth and tying with unwaxed dental floss. You may leave a bit of floss to pull it out afterward. Insert it in vagina and leave there for several hours, say overnight, and remove it in the morning. For severe infection, try this in the morning and during night both. Repeat this until one day after the symptoms disappear.
Pour a few drops of Teatree oil (available from natural health stores) on a lubricated tampon & insert into the vagina.
Insert 1 or 2 capsules of boric acid into the vagina and keep it there overnight for several nights. For some women the boric acid may cause burning and discomfort for the first few days.
Dissolve 1 Tbsp of potassium sorbate in 1 cup water. Insert a tampon into the vagina and pour this solution inside to be absorbed by the tampon. Keep it there overnight. Repeat this for several nights.
Add 1 Tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar in 2 cups of water and put 1 garlic clove in it. Let it stand for some time and use this for douching.
For other parts of the Body: Apply fresh garlic paste directly on the affected part of the body.
