Fetal Risk Summary
Controlled studies on the effects of cyclamate on the fetus have not been found. The drug crosses the placenta to produce fetal blood levels of about 25% of maternal serum (1). Cyclamate has been suspected of having cytogenetic effects in human lymphocytes (2). One group of investigators attempted to associate these effects with an increased incidence of malformations and behavioral problems, but a causal relationship could not be established (3).

Questions and Answers
Why should cyclamate only be used on the advice of a physician?, I just read the side of a Sweet'N'Low box (it contains sodium cyclamate), and was wondering why it says that. Sweet'N'Low's website wasn't too helpful.
because it's some bad sodium stuff
What is the safe daily dose of sweeteners?, I am type 2 diabetic. I like to know what is the maximum safe daily dose of the following sweeteners:
1- aspartame
2- Na cyclamate
3- Saccharine
Thanks in advance
There is no safe dose at all for artificial sweeteners.
If you have to have one, use Stevia, which is a natural sweetener that has been used in Japan for decades without any reported bad effects.
Read up on the chemicals you've mentioned, and you'll find that there are all kinds of potentially bad side-effects.
As a type II, the use of aspartame is particularly troubling. There is anecdotal evidence that aspartame messes with sugar metabolization and can increase the chance of obesity.
The ideal situation would be to ween yourself off of artificially sweetened drinks.
