Cloxacillin Risk Summary

Risk Factor: BM
Class: ANTI-INFECTIVES / Penicillins

Fetal Risk Summary

Cloxacillin is a penicillin antibiotic (see also Penicillin G). No published reports linking its use with congenital defects have been located. The Collaborative Perinatal Project monitored 50,282 mother-child pairs, 3,546 of which had 1st trimester exposure to penicillin derivatives (1, pp. 297313). For use anytime during pregnancy, 7,171 exposures were recorded (1, p. 435). In neither group was evidence found to suggest a relationship to large categories of major or minor malformations or to individual defects.

In a surveillance study of Michigan Medicaid recipients involving 229,101 completed pregnancies conducted between 1985 and 1992, 46 newborns had been exposed to cloxacillin during the 1st trimester (F. Rosa, personal communication, FDA, 1993). Three (6.5%) major birth defects were observed (two expected), including three cardiovascular defects (0.5 expected) and one hypospadias (none expected). Only with the former defect is there a suggestion of a possible association, but other factors, including the mother's disease, concurrent drug use, and chance, may be involved.

Breast Feeding Summary

No reports describing the use of cloxacillin during lactation have been located. Because other penicillins are excreted in milk in low concentrations (e.g., see Ampicillin and Penicillin G), the presence of cloxacillin should also be expected. Although adverse effects from penicillins in breast milk are rare, three potential problems exist for the nursing infant: modification of bowel flora, direct effects on the infant (e.g., allergic response), and interference with the interpretation of culture results if a fever workup is required.

Questions and Answers

Why does cloxacillin expand? even the expiry date is on 2010? Can I just transfer it to bottles?, Will the potency change or will it become toxic? The blister really got so bloated. I dont kno what happened. Please help. thanks a lot!

I would be a little concerned that something happened to the medicine to compromise its efficacy. I would show it to a pharmacist and ask them what they think.

Is it safe to take Cloxacillin 500mg and Polynerv-500mg at the same time?,

what happens if i take cloxacillin at 9 then took the next dose at 12 when the interval is 6 hours?,

Resume taking it on schedule but cut the next dose by half (if it's one pill, split it into half with a knife), then just resume normal dosing after that. Call up one of your doctor's nurses or the pharmacist if you are not sure.

what is iterax 10 mg medication and cloxacillin medication?, i need to know all the details about iterax 10mg and cloxacillin medications

Cloxacillin is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This medication is a type of penicillin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.
How to use Cloxacillin Oral

Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor. This medication is best absorbed when taken on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after meals).

If you are using the liquid suspension form of this medicine, shake the bottle well before each dose.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. In children, the dosage is also based on weight and age.

Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at evenly spaced intervals.

Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.

Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

i am not sure what iterax is unless you meant atarax.. but cloxacillian is an antibiotic usually used 2 treat like the flu, pneumonia and infections

Can Cloxacillin be given as IVTT?, Could you point me to a website that gives the info about it?

difference between sumapen capsule and cloxacillin sodium?, I know both sumapen and cloxacillin are atibiotics but I want to know why I should take sumapen instead of cloxacillin as my protection cause I have undergone mitral valve replacement

Cloxacillin is a weaker fighting antibiotic than Sumapen. Both stop the growth of bacteria but the Sumapen is stronger from the information I found, links will be at bottom. So that is why your doctor wants you to take the Sumapen (it is a stronger fighting antibiotic than Cloxacillin).

Sumapen was extremely difficult to find. Sumapen is Phenoxymethylpenicillin which belongs to a group of antibiotics called penicillins. They kill bacteria by interfering with their ability to form cell walls. The bacteria therefore break up and die.

Cloxacillin is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This medication is a type of penicillin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Cloxacillin has a weaker antibacterial activity.

I have a mechanical mitral valve and have to take antibiotics as prophylaxis treatment for dental work. I don't know if this is why you are taking them or not. Most of the time, I am prescribed Amoxicillin.

can Cloxacillin be used in place of amoxicillin?, or better yet can it be used to treat swollen infected gum tissue in mouth surrounding moving wisdom tooth?

Cloxacillin is used mostly for staph infections. Amoxicillin has a broader spectrum.

is it okay for me to take xenical, cloxacillin, and ascorbic acid at the same time?,

Probably, but also a very good chance of fecal leakage.

is it okay for me to take xenical, cloxacillin and ascorbic acid at the same time? thanks!!?,

I ran a drug interaction search using two separate resources and found no drug interactions between these three drugs. However, because of the action of the Xenical on the stomach, I would recommend taking it separate from the Cloxacillin and Ascorbic Acid. You wouldn't want to potentially decrease the effectiveness of the antibiotic. The cloxacillin should also be taken without food (1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal). Hope this helps.

what are the side affects of cloxacillin sodium?,

Upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gas, and mouth sores may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Although uncommon, you may develop a black, "hairy" tongue while taking this medication. This effect is harmless and usually goes away after treatment. Maintain good oral hygiene, and brush your tongue with a soft toothbrush twice a day. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: unusual tiredness, persistent sore throat, muscle aches, joint pain/swelling.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: easy bruising/bleeding, change in the amount of urine, pink or dark urine, persistent nausea/vomiting, stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes/skin.

This medication may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (pseudomembranous colitis) due to a resistant bacteria. This condition may occur during treatment or weeks after treatment has stopped. Do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications if you have the following symptoms because these products may make them worse. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop: persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, blood/mucus in your stool.

Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection (oral or vaginal fungal infection). Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling, new fever, chills, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
