Fetal Risk Summary

Ciclopirox is a synthetic antiinfective agent used topically for its antifungal properties. Very small amounts (1.3% of the dose with occlusive dressings) are absorbed systemically from the skin (1).

There was no evidence of teratogenic effects or other fetal harm in animals (mice, rats, rabbits, and monkeys) given doses of 10 times or more the topical human dose by various routes of administration (1).

No reports of its use in human pregnancy have been located. The manufacturer has no case reports of congenital abnormalities occurring after use of ciclopirox (C.K. Whitmore, personal communication, Hoechst-Roussel Pharmaceuticals, Inc., 1987).

Breast Feeding Summary

No reports describing the use of ciclopirox during lactation have been located. The very small amounts (1.3%) absorbed systemically with occlusive dressings probably indicates that infant exposure via the milk is negligible, if it occurs at all.

Questions and Answers

Are there any foot creams that are really close to the prescription cream Ciclopirox?, Work outside in rubber boots constantly in all seasons. Every summer feet itch and break out and peel.

If the Dr. prescribe that for you it means that you already have an infection. You need to treat the infection, and then work on preventing it from happening again. There are a variety of ways that you could try to prevent it, from changing socks during the day, to using foot powders, (along with changing socks if you're able to); just taking your boots off as often as you can.

Also, the infection most likely resides within your boots, so without treating the source of the problem you'll never really get rid of it. Try spraying some regular lysol in them after work and letting them sit for a few hours. And on your days off set them outside in the warm sun so that the sun actually can hit the inside of them, and that'll really help kill those little fungi.

As for something that is really close to the cream, there is nothing over the counter that is close to it, you could try Lotrimin A/F; or ask your local Pharmacist they would know for sure.

ciclopirox (Penlac) is an antifungal used to treat onychomycosis,a type of nail fungus.?, the direction say to apply the lacquer to each nail daily. will the ciclopirox have a local or system effect? why?

After you apply the lacquer to your skin, the ciclopirox will penetrate through the epidermis (outer layer of your skin, made up in most areas of the body of 5 layers) into the dermis.

Even under occlusion (which increases absorption), less than 1.5% of the ciclopirox is absorbed into the systemic circulation. Ciclopirox has a short half-life (1.7 hours), so no systemic accumulation occurs and therefore no systemic effect will occur.

To answer your question in a more succinct manner - there is only a small amount of absorption into the systemic circulation (<1.5%) due to the protective function of the skin and the properties of the drug.
