Fetal Risk Summary

Cefpodoxime is an oral, semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic. Reproduction studies found no evidence in rats of impaired fertility or reproductive performance or, in rats and rabbits, of embryo toxicity or teratogenicity, at doses up to two times the human dose on a mg/m2 basis (1).

No reports describing the use of cefpodoxime during human pregnancy have been located. Cephalosporins are usually considered safe to use during pregnancy (see other cephalosporins for published human experience).

Breast Feeding Summary

According to the manufacturer, low concentrations of cefpodoxime are excreted into human milk (1). Following 200-mg oral doses administered to three women, milk concentrations, as a percentage of concomitant serum levels, 4 hours after the dose were 0%, 2%, and 6%, respectively, and at 6 hours, 0%, 9%, and 16%, respectively. Although not specifically stated for these three women, mean serum concentrations in fasted adults after a 200-mg dose were 2.2 mg/mL at 2 and 3 hours (peak levels), 1.8 mg/mL at 4 hours, and 1.2 mg/mL at 6 hours (1).

In spite of these low levels, three potential problems exist for the nursing infant exposed to cefpodoxime in milk: modification of bowel flora, direct effects on the infant, and interference with the interpretation of culture results if a fever workup is required. Although not specifically listing cefpodoxime, the American Academy of Pediatrics classifies other cephalosporin antibiotics as compatible with breast feeding (2).

Questions and Answers

Is it safe to take cefpodoxime and doxycycline at the same time?, Any potential interactions between the two? Thank you!

Doxycycline and Cefpodoxime are commonly prescribed together to treat Urethritis caused by both Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. However this treatment has a specific dosage, so it's hard to say without knowing the dose. In any case, I would be wary of taking any antibiotics unless a practitioner prescribed it.

is Cefpodoxime Proxetil Tablets and Theophylline Syrup for cough during 5 month pregnancy safe?,

Cefpodoxime Proxetil: safety or danger in pregnancy has not been established.

Theophylline: It does cross the placenta to go to the baby but no major risks have been found, if taken close to delivery the newborn might vomit and be irritable. It actually decreases risk of Pre-eclamspia

Please list types of infections that Vantin (Orelox; Cefpodoxime) is usually prescribed for?,

Cefpodoxime proxetil used for ?, What is the use of cefpodoxime proxetil? doctor prescribe my wife. she is 12 month pregnant. Is there any side effect ? Plz help.

By simply inserting the drug name in a search engine like Yahoo or Google, a wealth of sites and information can be found.
Even Wikipedia have a listing.
Some of the information is technical and difficult to follow but some is easily understood.

It seems this drug is used to control bacteria that is very resistant to other treatments. It helps soothe/cure illness like hearing problems (ostitus medea), breathing difficulties (sisinusitis urinary tract infections (including some STDs) amongst other things.
It is expressed in breast milk.

Side effects are rare and few but can be serious (seizures).

As you are unfamiliar, read all you can and further quiz your doctor and pharmacist.

Absorption of cefpodoxime proxetil from stomach as compared to other sites.?,

The absorption in the stomach (bioavailability) will be around 50%. If you take the tablet with food the absorption is actually increased by 21 to 33%. If you take the suspension with food it delays how quickly the drug will get into your body. Typically you will reach your peak concentration 2-3 hours after taking the med. There is no IV form of the drug available but, IV drugs always have 100% bioavailablity if you want something to compare it to.

If the doctor prescribed me something to stop bacteria, is there an alternative?, the drugs names are: azithromycin and cefpodoxime.

Is there like a homeopathic remedy that i can take instead? I tried to get tested for all the STDs. they did for most. but said that these prescriptions would stop stuff...just in case?

Likely you are getting treated for an STD.
There is no substitute for antibiotics in the acute situation.
Let the issue get treated by the pills, then look into changing the
factors that brought it on in the first place.

IS PYODERMA BAD? can it kill a dog? is it curable?, thanks............ also is cefpodoxime an steroid or an antiviotic, clemastine? ana also clavamox?

Pyoderma should not kill a dog. If it was left untreated and the dog became septic I suppose it could, but this would be extremely rare. It is a skin infection caused by certain types of bacteria and yeast. It causes discomfort for your dog and sometimes has a bad odor. It is curable but if the dog is predisposed to pyoderma due to allergies or genetic factors, it may re-occur. Certain breeds are more likely to get pyodermas especially those with many skin folds like shar peis and bulldogs. Cefpodoxime and Clavamox are antibiotics and clemastine is an antihistamine to help with itchiness associated with some pyodermas. Your vet may also recommend bathing the dog with a medicated shampoo.

Antibiotics and the Immune System?, I just finished taking Cefpodoxime 200mg, Doxycycl 100mg, it is used for Chlamydia, which i didnt have, but had the symptoms for it, and after a week or so they prescribed me for Metronidazole 500mg, which is supposed to cure Trichomonosis which is an std, which is something i also dont have, they dont know what i have, its an infection or something that looks a lot like an std, is this safe? will my immune system stay the same?

taking antibiotics should negatively affect ur immune system. u may end up with side effects and things such as neusea and possibly thrush (yeast infection)

ur immune system stay the same because the whole point o antibiotics are help ur immune system fight bacterial infections.

give the doctors a chance they should be able to work out what youve got with a bit of time

Stomach ailment that won't go away.... please help.?, For two months I have had a burning itchy growling stomach. It started when I was taking cefpodoxime for a sinus infection. I stopped taking that two months ago and the ailments still remain. I get stomach bloating, gas, and radiating pains that occur all over my stomach, the lower left and right quadrant and the upper left and right quadrant. I have been unable to sleep on my stomach for 2 months due to this. THERE IS NO DIARRHEA, NO VOMITTING AND NO NAUSEA at all associated with this. I have been taking protoninx 40 MG for 2 months. All the doctors tell me that antibiotics wouldn't cause this. I have had a HIDA scan, abdominal ultrasound, chest x-ray, stress test, echo, blood work, EGD, H. pylori, and some food allergy tests. Nothing has shown up in any of them. I am a 30 year old man, lactose intolerant, don't smoke, drink, or use any drugs. Please help. Any advice. I am starting to become depressed feeling I will never get better.

You have had lots of medical tests, and you are still having problems. Antibiotics can kill the naturally occuring bacteria in your intestines. I would seriously consider contacting a naturopath or seeking help from a practitioner of natural medicine. You need help reestablishing the health of your digestive system.

Gastrointestinal help needed!?, For about a month my stomach has been burning, growling and itchy. The burning appears mostly around the belly button area. It also moves to the lower left and right abdominal and sometimes around my left and right breast. After eating it usually gets worse, no matter what I eat. I had an EGD done, which came back clean, and all the biopsies were negative. I have had in the past year a stress test, HIDA scan, abdominal ultrasound, chest x-ray, blood work and an ECHO and all came back as O.K. Other than the burning I sometimes get a bloated feeling and gas. Bowel movements have all remained normal. I had been taking antibiotics nearly constantly for four months due to sinus and dental problems. The last antibitiotics I took were CEFPODOXIME PROXETIL. This all seemed to start when I started taking the CEFPO and seemed to improved when I stopped taking it. However, that was nearly a month ago and symptoms, although better still exist. Any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.

If it isn't related to your medication, you might try an upper GI or small bowel series, or abdominal CT.

CEFPODOXIME PROXETIL SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and headache. If they continue or become severe, inform your doctor promptly. Other side effects reported with this medication include anxiety, insomnia and dizziness. Inform your doctor if any of these effects occur. Unlikely to occur but report promptly: fever, easy bleeding or bruising, a change in the amount of urine, seizures. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: difficulty breathing, skin rash, hives, itching. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

**Actually an EGD is NOT the same as an upper GI. For an UGI, you drink barium and x-rays are taken; for an EGD, you are sedated and a camera is put down your throat.**
