Name: BENDROFLUMETHIAZIDE
Class: Diuretic
Risk Factor: CM*
Fetal Risk Summary
Bendroflumethiazide is a thiazide diuretic. Animal reproduction studies during the period of organogenesis have not been conducted with this agent.
In a study reported in 1964, 1,011 women received bendroflumethiazide, 5 mg/day, from the 30th week of gestation until delivery in an attempt to prevent preeclampsia and eclampsia (1). No fetal adverse effects were noted.
See Chlorothiazide for other reports of the clinical use of thiazide diuretics in pregnancy and the potential fetal and newborn toxicity of these agents. In general, diuretics are not recommended in the treatment of pregnancy-induced hypertension because of the maternal hypovolemia characteristic of this disease.
[*Risk Factor D if used in pregnancy-induced hypertension.]
Breast Feeding Summary
Bendroflumethiazide has been used to suppress lactation (2). (See Chlorothiazide.)

Can Bendroflumethiazide cause problems?
Along with their useful effects all medicines can cause unwanted side effects. These usually improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine. Speak to your doctor or chemist if any of the following side effects continue or become troublesome.
Light-headedness, stomach pains, sexual problems, gout (pain and stiffness in the joints), dry mouth, muscle cramps, or skin rashes.
This medicine can occasionally cause you to lose too much potassium or sodium from the body, which are essential for good health. Severe sickness and diarrhoea may increase your chances of potassium or sodium loss. If you experience this contact your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible.
Aprinox:
Thiazide diuretics act in the kidney to remove water from the blood into the urine, by causing an increase in the removal of salts such as potassium and sodium from the blood. This removal of salts causes water to be drawn out of the blood and into the kidneys, where it is then excreted in the urine.
Removing water from the blood decreases the volume of fluid circulating through the blood vessels. The drop in fluid volume results in a drop in the pressure of the fluid within the blood vessels, which helps to lower high blood pressure. It also decreases the effort required by the heart to pump blood around the body.
There are many conditions which may lead to an accumulation of fluid in the body (oedema). Bendroflumethiazide is commonly used in conditions such as heart failure, where the pumping mechanism of the heart is less effective. It is used to relieve the symptoms of heart failure, such as fluid retention. It is also used to relieve fluid retention from many other causes.
What is it used for?
Excess fluid retention causing swelling (oedema) due to any cause
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Suppression of milk production (lactation) in women
Warning!
It is recommended that blood tests are performed regularly to monitor the level of potassium in the blood. If this level is too low, potassium supplements may be required.
If you experience any of the following symptoms while taking this medicine you should inform your doctor promptly, so that the amount of fluids and salts in your body can be checked: thirst, lethargy, confusion, weakness, drowsiness, muscle cramps, scanty production of urine, abnormal heart rhythm, seizures, nausea and vomiting.
As diuretics cause your kidneys to produce more urine, you may prefer to take this medicine in the morning rather than before going to bed, as this will reduce the likelihood of you needing to get up in the night to visit the toilet. Seek further advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Bendroflumethiazide is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and oedema (fluid retention), often caused by heart failure. It removes excess water from the body by increasing how often you urinate (pass water) and also widens the blood vessels which helps to reduce blood pressure.
at the moment she taking Bendroflumethiazide 2/5mg, she takes 1 a day in the morning.im just so worried i really want to help her.
can a ten fold increase in diuretic use result in raised albumin and BUN levels during testing for kidney function. I am a type 1 diabetic and i know that diabetes can cause increased levels but want to exclude the accide ntal over use of this diuretic as a seperate cause as my protein level has increase from 57mg to 314mg in less than 1 year, during this time i have accidentally been taking 25mg of HTZ rather than 2.5mg Bendroflurerthiazide. Can the protein level be reversed if caused purely by over use of diuretics
An elderly gentlemen has come to me for help. He often goes out for a long walk and recently the cause of nature gave him an overpowering need to discharge ballast, his problem being that he is on medication called Bendroflumethiazide, which reduces blood pressure by making person go to toilet frequently. But when he went to the nearest public toilet he found it locked, which they apparently do because of vandalising by local yobs. So getting more and more desperate he eventually did the job by a tree in a local park, ensuring nobody was around but not knowing area was monitored by police CCTV. Soon after completion of his action he was horrified to see a police panda car approaching, but says he escaped and shook them off by disappearing into the woods and back home. But he is now frightened to come out, as he says if he is spotted by police, with his picture on CCTV, he will be arrested and so become a criminal. Do others have any advice to pass on to him about this heinious crime

My grandmother is on pills for high blood pressure (Atenolol 75mg per day, aspirin 75mg, bendroflumethiazide 2.5mg & coracten xl m/r capules 30mg). She wants to take coenzyme q10 for gum disease, so would it be safe to take it with all this or would she be better off dropping the others and just taking coenzyme q10. Please don't suggest she ask her doctor as she has and he's never heard of it.
Coenzyme Q10 is also an energy booster.
I have High Blood Pressure, my doctor has put me on a pill called Bendroflumethiazide which was working nicely, no problems. Now my doctor said my pressure was still too high and put me on Coracter Nifedipine which has made my leg swell to the size of a 'tree trunk' and bright red. Has anyone had the same effect. Doctor now tells me I have a leg infection..but can't see why.
