Weight loss -- its all in your head

When you truly consider the weight-loss process, the battle waged is mostly in your mind."Should I eat the corn muffin with butter or would it be better forMe to have margarine or better yet, have jelly? What am I doing eating this muffin anyway? It's soCaloric and filled with saturated fat. I'm such a pig. I have absolutely zero willpower."

It's no wonder you'll eat that muffin with the butter and slather jelly on top to quiet that negative self-talk. What you need more than a diet is a way to shift those negative self-defeating thoughts to more adaptive, positive self-statements. As with most things worth doing, this requires a bit of practice. First, becomeAware when you're using a negative statement, then determine what about that thought is faulty and finally, replace it with a self-defense response or coping thought. In the corn muffin example, instead of listening to "I'm such a pig" which clearly mislabels who you are, respond with "Pigs are animals and I am human. I don't have to be perfect."

ManyPeople cannot change their eating habits until they change their thoughts about food, eating and drinking. By shedding "distorted" thoughts and replacing them with productive ones, eating habitsCan be changed. It is possible to ridYourself from many self-critical thoughts, but like any ingrained habit, itTakes vigor and vigilance to change. Here areSome other thinking distortions to challenge:Shoulds. Should statements are more about other people's values,NotOnes chosen by the person who wants to lose weight.

Additionally, should statements reflect an attempt by the dieter to motivate herself without really believing in the value. Better toDetermine what works for you. "I will eat up to two Hershey kisses daily and thoroughly enjoy them."

All-or-Nothing.

This kind of reasoningIs the foundation for perfectionism. An all-or-nothing individual views the world as black or white. Since there is no allowance for gray areas, theBehavior is either perfect or a failure. "I've ruined my diet by eating all that pizza. I can't stay on a diet and I'll just always be fat." Maybe the problem does not arise from the behavior maybe the problem is with the diet that does not allow for pizza. "IDo not want to givePizza up for the rest of my life, so what I need isA way to include pizza in my diet without feeling like a failure. Let meTry having a salad (dressing on the side) before the pizza to take theEdge off my hunger."Good Foods/ Bad Foods. If the truth be told, foods do notMisbehave. Foods are not good or bad. While it is true that some foods have more nutrients or are more fiber-dense than others, all foods can be enjoyed. How we think about food colors what we eat and how much we eat. If A food is labeled as bad (such as fries), thenFor many individuals that food is taboo. When one eventually succumbs to eating the forbidden, French fries, bingeing may result. RatherThan continue with dichotomous thinkingOf good food/bad food, shift to allow space for all foods you like without judgement. Instead of "I ate those friesWhich are so bad for me" to "IReallyEnjoyed that smallPortion of fries. They really satisfied me."

Body Distortions.

Rather thanDwelling on how fatOr thin you think your body is, it is extremely helpful to view your body in terms of what it can do for you. For example, when you look in the mirror, instead of zooming in on your stomach which "looks five months pregnant,Although your last baby was nine years ago" tell yourself "my body has given life" or "my body enables me to go whereIWant to and allows me to have fun."The conversations that are going on inside your head cannot be stopped. However, what you can do is to be aware of negative self-talk and understand that it has little to do with actual reality. When you believe this, you can respond toThe criticalVoice with aMore objective, coping thought. Although negative thoughts may not be stopped entirely, they can be quieted by listening to your compassionate, caring voice. In much the same way you would sympathize and listen to a close friend, listen to yourself. Be your own best friend and chances are you'll have greater weight loss success.

Is loosing weight all in your head?

Do we really need these weight loss programs or diet books.

Since I gave birth 19 months ago I have been eating unhealthy, Carbs, Carbs, and more Carbs. Until recently it started affecting my health (getting pregnant again, pre-diabetes) and of course weight gain.
However, for about 1 week now, I have had minimum Carbs (only in whole wheat), just been eating healthy and exercising almost everyday. It has been several months of having medical tests done but I found out the irregular results last week.
The doctor had to tell me that I have to loose weight or i will be taking Medication for the rest of my life. And that is what brought on this change. My friend offered me chocolate yesterday and I refused and watched her eat it. I have tired diet pills weight watchers, shakes everything in the past, but I never felt as motivated as I do now. I think we don't need any of these programs, I think it's all in our head. What do you think?

I agree with you -- sort of. Personal motivation is the one thing that will keep a person living a healthy lifestyle (and lack of personal motivation will doom anyone's efforts to lose weight or get in shape), but there's a lot of misinformation out there about what food is good for you and what isn't. For example, many people believe eggs are bad for you because they're high in cholesterol. Not true. Eggs are high in protein and monounsaturated fat, which actually helps to lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol. There's a mountain of scientific research to back this up, but people are still scared to eat eggs, or just egg yolks, because they think their cholesterol levels are going to go through the roof. So it's not only important to have your mental state in order, you also need to have your facts straight. Once you know which types of diets are bad (low-carb and low-fat being among them) and what type of diets are good (balanced diets high in protein, fiber, mono-and-polyunsaturated fat, and vitamins and minerals from real food sources) you can make permanent changes in your eating habits -- and your exercise habits -- that will allow you to stay in the best health and within 10 pounds of your ideal weight for life.

I lost 50 lbs within 11 months but now hair is thinning on top of head..does rapid weight loss cause hair loss?

Im 26 yr old guy, beginning about 2 months ago for the first time in my life i noticed that i can start seeing my scalp through my hair in the light!!! prior to this i had lost 50 lbs within id say 10 - 11 months..(vigirous excercise, supplements, not eating as much junk, etc). wel i feel great because of that, but now my hair is thinning on the top and im really scared that it wont grow back!

could this rapid weight loss have caused this hair thinning ?? or do u tink i was going to lose my hair anyways and coincidentally it just started showing a few months after all my weight loss??

TIMELINE: (25 years old) i started actively trying losing weight. 11 months later i am 50 lbs lighter (from 185 now at 135). about 3 - 4 months later i start noticeing this thinning on the top of my head (for the first time in my life). ive never had issues with hair thinning EVER before (im 26 now), and i dont know if it runs in my genetics because i was adopted.

So will i be lucky and it will start growing back to its original fullness? or am i SOL?/ im really scared ive always had a full head of hair but now its sort of noticable! it comes out when i am in the shower , shampooing it, running my hand through it..when i go to style it etc..
i have dyed it before on a semi regular basis but now i dont. i also put a little gel in it. but again, ive never had this problem in all 26 years of my life up until 3 months ago when i began noticing this. if this is the sacrifice i have to make for the weight loss..then id rather be 180 lbs like i was b4 and get my hair back!! im 5' 9' and asian too. please tell me that this is only temporary and its going to grow back, im only 26! oh and one more thing i was unders a lot of stress during that time period of weight loss to but i have been stress free for months now ..

I started losing my hair after a rapid weight loss at about your age and I am female, so yes it can happen. Once I started eating better ( not dieting as much ) my hair came back, but it took a long time

I'll actually answer your question... there is absolutley no connection between weight loss and your hair loss. Just unfortunate timing. COngrats on the weight loss. Focus on that rather than your hair

Weight Loss?

I know its bad but what are your thoughts on using cocaine as a weight loss or diet drug. nothing seems to work for me and im willing to try anything. the only thing that has worked for me is eating no food at all for days on end and excerising to the point i get light headed at the same time, but even this only loses me a pound or 2 and this has to be just as bad

Your taking a completely wrong approach at this. Don't do drugs for weight loss, and even the whole eat nothing and excercise a lot did not help at all. You're supposed to eat 5 - 6 small meals a day of healthy foods. When you don't eat your body thinks it's going into starvation mode, therefore storing fat to make you feel like you don't need food. Eat a low calorie diet
Take your bodyweight X 12 and thats how many calories a day you should consume. A good tool to use would be http://www.caloriesperhour.com to calculate what you need to lose weight. Also do cardiovascular excercises like running.
Try to run 30 - 40 minutes a day, and eat healthy, the fat will come right off. You really have to stick to the healthy food, you cant go off cheating everyday, have a cheat meal maybe once a week to reward yourself.
Hope this helps.

Can someone give me some weight loss/work out head-ups?

I wish to lose around 20 pounds by september 2nd (when school starts). I'm 15, 139 lbs, 5'5.

--I'm not a big eater and I hardly ever eat over 1000 calories per day.
--I drink around 6-7 (12 ouce) cup of water each day. (around 75 ouces of water)
--I walk around an hour each day - walking my dog.
--Pear shaped body.

I would like some weightloss / workout tips. Especially workout tips.*

*I can't join a gym or anything (my mom thinks that it's too expensive).

you have definitley made a good start, so here are some pointers
1. i know this sounds pretty obvious, but walk as much as possible. if your going to the shops, meeting a friend or are just bored, walk it. the exercise makes you feel good and helps towards your goal.
2. try to avoid sugary foods. again, it sounds obvious, but modern diets are filled with sugar and gunk we dont even know about, and when you dont get a fix, your body will cry out. it takes will power, but i know if you want to lose that weight, you'll try hard.
3. you dont need to join a gym! think about it, what kind of machines are in gyms? stair machines? cycle machines? walk up and down stairs! take out a bike roubd the block! i know its not ideal as using speically made equipment, but if you are on a budget, anything will do. you might be surprised at what you find.
4. if you do start finding exercise difficult, try and carry on as long as you can. for instance, if you are jogging, and its starting to hurt or your legs are aching, power walk for 2 mins, and then carry on, it hurts less everytime you do this.
5. if you feel yourself reaching for the snack cupboard, stop, and focus on your goal! it really helps to remember what you are shooting for when youre starting to slip.

try and keep these tips in mind, and no one will recognize you when you go back to school. good luck!

Do you think its possible for me to run and complete a half marathon with only 4 months to train?

I am 190lbs. and only 5 feet tall. I realise I need to get into shape but everytime i approach weight loss head on i always stray and fail. I had an idea, I thought setting a goal to complete a half marathon (13.1miles) by september 23 this year I would accomplish a goal and lose weight in the process. Kind of psyching myself out i guess you would say. I just want to know if there are any runners out there that think that this is realistic. You know for a girl almost 200lbs to train for 4 months and be in good enough shape to run that long distance. please let me know....is my goal unrealistic?

I think it is possible, but if you end up walking some of the race that would be OK too. In fact you might want to plan on running for 5 minutes and walking for one the whole race--you are much less likely to get injured this way. Don't go out and run really hard, get injured, and then stop. Even in your training--start SLOWLY.

could this be the answer to all those weight loss questions?

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour.

Pretty funny !!
GIven that people post the same exact questions over and over without bothering to read other posts (which already have the answers to their questions), yes ... a nice break

Thanks for the giggle !!

need advice! whats your opinion on my weight loss method? is this normal?

ok so this is guna sound really weird but i want to know ur opinion.
im 16, 5 ft 5 weight range is 80-100 lbs. im not eating. i excercise at least 3 hours a day.
i dont really have a weight loss goal. i just think im fat. (if that makes any sense) my friends all say im anorexic and crapp but i just think of it as a diet. then again, i dont know what anorexia even is.
im so scared to gain weight and if i do eat, i calorie count and i purge. i feel like im obsessed with it cuz i cant get it out of my head. EVER. im always thinking about how many calories i could be losing or am losing at any given time or how much i dont want to eat ever again.
btw, ive recently ( last 3 mnths) dropped 45 lbs from this :D
is this an ok way to lose weight? is it normal?

this is not normal.
to excersise 3 hours a day is obsessive, unless you're an olimpic champion.
you destroying your body with starvation, your body is not getting any nutrition. Right now it's using inner resourses to keep going but soon it will run out and you will be severely sick. Your bones will start braking for no reason, you stomach will shrink so much that you won't be able to eat you will eventually die.
So, now you have a choice. But if you keep on going your "diet" your parents will put you in a hospital cuz they don't want you to die.
