Low carb stupidity vs. low carb intelligence - making the most of your lo carb lifestyle
Category: Diet
Believing that carrots,Bananas or tomatoes are fattening because they're high on the glycemic index and because a popular fad dietBook says so.
Low carb intelligence
Have Americans Lost any remaining grip with common sense? With an average banana coming in at 120 calories do you really think that this yellow, nutrient-dense, low-calorie, all-natural, straight-out-of-the-ground fruit is going to make you fat? Compare that to the average serving of salad dressing which clocks in at over 160 calories with absolutely no redeeming nutritional value. Perhaps carrots, bananas and tomatoes have 5-10 more calories per serving than broccoli or cucumbers but try them against a "low carb bar" which clockIn atTypicallyOver 200
Low Carb StupidityBelieving calories don't count if you just count carb grams. Didn't we go through this years ago when we were a nation of "fat gram" counters ??
Low carb Intelligence
1. Knowing that fat loss or gain always did and always will boil down to the fact that if you eat more than you burn youWill gain weight. If you eat fewer calories than you burn youWill lose weight .
2. Taking the time to understand the caloric value of the foodsThat you are eating
3. LearningTo eat appropriateSINGLE servings instead of "supersizing" everything.
4. Keeping a food journal and taking some time to preplan and avoiding mindless "boredom" or "stress" eating
5. Knowing that the June issue of consumer reports shows that Low-carb versions of comfort foods-- bread, pasta, and ice cream -- often contain more fat and calories than regular versions
LowCarb StupidityCarbohydrates Make you fat, Protein makes you lose weight - We all know who started this one!
People have somehow gotten it into their heads that weight gain is all about the carbGrams, not the calories. People who quote this myth won't touch aPotato (100 calories, 0g fat), but then proceed to eat a 16oz steak for dinner (915 calories, 57g fat). They'll refuse theHamburger bun (120 calories, 2g fat) but take an extra meat pattyTo make up for it (500 calories, 32g fat)
Low Carb Intelligence
1. Realizing that If you eat more than you burn you will get fat, regardless of the source -
2. Realizing that if you eat less and you will lose weight -
3. Knowing that Some people on low-carb dietsDo lose weight initially, but this is due to primarily to the fact that theyHave cut overall calories or have lost an abundance of waterAnd lean muscle.
4. Understanding thatOverdosing on protein and cutting out carbohydrates does not equal successful weight loss. It does,However, mean missing out on vital nutrients from healthy carbohydrate foods which should be part of any well-balance diet.
If you're considering a low-carb diet, remember to count your calories and nutrients first. You should also consult your doctor or health professional beforeMaking this life-style change.
Low Carb StupidityEating lots of manufactured,Over processed,Chemical laden low carb foods and thinking you're "being good" and "following your diet".
Low Carb Intelligence
Realizing thatNatural, unrefined foods are one of the keysTo lifelong Weight control and thatAnything man-made and refined is neither healthy or an ideal "diet" food This bandwagon remind me of the "no fat" craze, when all those "fat free" foods were being passed off as healthy diet food, but were really highly processed and fullOf pure sugar and sodium -
Low carb stupiditySelecting your beer or liquor carefully to make sure youHave the brand with the fewest grams of carbs.
Low carb intelligence
1. Realizing that a few gramsOf carbs don't make all that much of a difference and that most "lo carb" beers haveThe same caloric content as "lite" beers Avoiding alcohol if you're tryingTo lose body fat.
2. Drinking only in moderation if you're trying to lose weight and be healthy
Low carb stupidityThinking thatVery low carb (ketogenic)Dieting is a maintainable "lifestyle."
Low carb intelligence
1. Understanding that reasonable (moderate) restriction of carbs can be aHelpful shortTerm strategy for fat loss, a legitimate methodTo control appetite, and an effective way forSome people to control insulin.
2. Understanding that there are no bad foods only inappropriate amounts -
3. Understanding that the fact that most Americans eat when they are not hunger and don't stop when they are full NOT carbs are the reason that 66% of Americans are overweight.
4. Understanding that a balanced diet of natural foods is probably the most suitableOf all the diets for health, lifelongMaintenance and weight control.
LowCarb stupidityBelieving that if you cut your carbs you do not needTo exercise to lose weight and maintain that loss long term
Low carb intelligence
Knowing that dieting is the worst way to lose fat and that exercise in combinationWith a healthy, balanced diet is The best way to lose fat permanently
Low carb stupidityUsing the argument; "There's no such thing as an essential carbohydrate" as justification forLow carb dieting.
Low carb intelligence
Realizing that textbook definitions of "essential" can be taken out of context to promote a fad diet and that just because there's technically no "essential" carbohydrates (as there are essential amino acids andFatty acids) doesn't mean carbohydrates aren't "essential" in other respects.
Low carb stupidityUsing the argument, "You have to eat fat to lose fat" as justification for a high fat, low carb diet, without explaining it or putting it in context (exactly how much fat andWhat kind ofFat?)
Low carb Intelligence
Understanding the importance of essential and omega three fats (the good fats), but not taking any single nutritional principle to anExtreme (such as, "If a little fat is good for youThen a lot is even better.")
Low carb stupidityNot clarifying your definition of low carbs.
Low carb intelligence
1. Realizing that there are "very low"CarbDiets, "low" carbDiets, and "moderate" carb diets and that you cannot classify them all together. (Some people consider The Zone Diet, at 40% of calories from carbs, a lowCarb diet, others consider 40% carbs quite high).
2. Understanding the importance of "carbs" as a portion of your total caloric intake
Low Carb Stupidity - Thinking that all carbs are bad
Low carb intelligence
Understanding that there is quite a difference between an over processed, refined donut and a wholesome, nutrient laden potato .
Low carb stupidityGoing on the Atkins diet (or any other very low carb/ketogenic diet) with absolutely no ideaWhy you're doing it or how it works (going on it because "everybody"Is doing it and because you see it advertised everywhere.)
Low carb intelligence
Understanding that most of the weight loss is due to fluid loss . Realizing that Americans eat an average of 200 calories a day more than they did 10 years ago and move far less
Understanding that if you eat 10 calories a day more than your body needs you will gain 10 pounds a year and blaming "Carbs" for the weight gain
Understanding that unless you make changes towards an overall healthful lifestyle most people will gain all their weight back theMinute they "go off" the diet
Low Carb StupidityBelieving that if you eat zero net-carbs, you will lose weight won't gain weight . Buying into the carb-counting craze, food manufacturers have come out with a new term to sell their products. "Net carbs" is a deceptive way to count only the negligible carbohydrates that come from artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols, and ignore the others from starch and regular sugars.
Low Carb Intelligence
Realizing that sugar alcohol and fiber are not "nothing", they still have calories UnderstandingThat "Low-carb" labels are meaningless. In manufacturingLow-carb products, sugars are replaced with "unnaturally high concentrations"Of sugar alcohols, refined grains, and starches -- all of which are carbohydrates and contributeTo caloric intake.
3. Understanding that because these "replacement carbs" move through the small intestine withoutGetting absorbed, manufacturers subtract them from the carb content. That's the "net carbs" number listed on theProductLabel
4. Realizing that the recent focus on low carbs will continue to draw people away from healthy eating and just provide them with another excuse to live off junk food
5. Remember, any "low net-carb" claim is diverting your attention away from the fat and calorie content of a food.
Questions and Answers
Atkins vs. South Beach: What are the main differences? They are both plans for a low carb lifestyle, right? I heard someone saying to a woman "OH, Don't do Atkins, it's TERRIBLE! You should do South Beach, that's the good one."
I know people who have done both - and some who have succeeded on both and some who have "failed" on both.
They both involve cutting carbs out of your life at first and then slowing re-introducing healthy carbs into your diet, right?
Or am I missing something?
The reason I'm so interested is that I and the wife are thinking of trying one of these low-carb lifestyle things - what are the major differences? In just skimming the internet, the only difference I notice is the name of each "diet". Anyone who can offer insight or info, please answer.
Just go to this web site. I do Atkins and I am experienced with it. I know that it is healthy but you decide for yourself. Go to this site that i will post below and you can make up your own mind without biased opinions.
Red Bull vs Monster Lo-Carb, which has less health risks? I like Monster Lo-Carb, but I never drink all of the 16oz can in one day. And I've only had it three times. I've sipped a Red Bull and it's not God awful like I thought. But which has less health risks. I know Monster has less carbs, but I mean how much sugar they have and whether I can have heart trouble. I don't want to be sippin' on a $2 heart attack and all.
Well Monster is very sugary even the low carb ones so I don't recommend drinking it. Redbull isn't accutally very sugary plus you can buy it in sugar free if you wish.
do you think that drinking too much lo-carb monster drinks is bad for your body? I drink at most two a day and i drink the lo-carb one with fewer calories.......
Drinking too much of anything is bad for you.
Where can I find a lo cal, low carb, low fat, low cholestrol soup recipe? I was looking at the epicurious.com site for diet recipes and there was a remark from a cook from Canada that said there were much better soup recipes than the one posted. BUT... They left no email of where to write to say SO...Lets have that super soup recipe. there are no top chefs in my family and the ones that can cook cook with many calories added and things I don't need to diet or get healthier. So are there any good soup cooks out there that wish to share a few recipes? I need to lose 80 pounds and want to totally change the recipes I've grown up with and learn how to grocerie shop healthy without going broke. Thank you everyone who answers. Overweight from Pennsylvania
First you take a pan of water...and heat that up...
That's about the healthiest you're going to get with all that low cal, fat...blahblahblah
The way to lose weight is...
* Stop drinking soda
* Eat sugary foods VERY sparingly, or not at all if you can help it
* Exercise
* Drink a LOT of water
* Eat smaller portions
* Be aware of everything you add to food that jacks up the total fat/cal count....such as a nutrious salad with very fattening dressing
* Give yourself " rewards " for getting so far...
Ex. " Lose 10 pounds, get a new shirt....lose 5 more, get a cappucino "
With a reward system, you won't feel as though you're depriving yourself from as much.
Good luck! If I can do it, anyone can!!!
Can the low-carb diet (atkins) be a permanent lifestyle change? Some people have said that, at best, it should only be used for 6 months max since it is so high in fat and protein and so low in carbs. I've heard others (not doctors) say that it is perfectly healthy to make low-carb your permanent way of eating for the rest of your life. What's the truth here? If someone spends several years doing low-carb will they eventually have heart trouble or any other medical trouble relating to the diet?
The low carb diet is a life style change... the high protein and high fat is a misconception since you body naturally prevents you from eating too much on this diet...
I suggest you go to your local library and find the follow-up book, Atkins for Life... this have life examples of how at-risk individuals turned their health issues around with a low carb diet and adopted it in their lives...
What is better for you if you are working out and dieting? Vitaminwater energy vs. Monster lo-carb? I am starting to workout again and need the energy in the morning's. I have to have something each morning but some people tell me that the Monster lo-carb is better Carb/calorie wise but i would think that to be wrong. I am confused and would like to be pointed in the right direction. Thanks!
He's right energy drinks actually do more harm for working out as opposed to helping. They dehydrate the body faster than any other drink and also do not provide any salts (you need salts because you sweat it out during work out). They have extra sugars and most of the "energy boosting vitamins" they claim help have never been proven. Proven workout drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade would be best, along with water.
starting low carb lifestyle where do I begin? I want to change to a low carb lifestyle. I do not know where to begin.
has it helped anyone with fibromyalgia?
Rule all excessive carb foods out of your life: Bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, etc. It's hard, but worth it!
What is your opinion on a low carb lifestyle?
1. Another silly fad
2. Potentially hard on the kidneys
How do I survive the low carb lifestyle? I am just starting out (again) on a low carb diet, but everyone close to me eats very high carb foods. How do people get through that and how does one survive and maintain a low-carb diet?
ok, for example, everyone around you is easting pizza. to avoid the temptation, have mozzerella sticks, no breaded, spaghetti sauce, and say some peperoni slices on hand..that way you get basicly a pizza w/out the carby crust.
i LOVED when i was on a low car diet..i have not felt so good in YEARS!!! yeah i am going back on it. i really and truly felt better physicaly and mentaly and emoptiobnaly more balanced.
hope that helped.
she said LOW CARB not NO CARB!!
example. your body burns fat to make energy, hence weight loss, but your body will burn carbs first. so the first couple weeks you take all carb out until you hit ketosis (body burning fat for energy) when that happens, you slowly add carbs keeping track of it till you go out of ketosis, then you drop the number of carbs you can have back down to where you were burning them just under the limit that brought you out of ketosis. that is the amount of carbs you can have per day and still maintain fat burning. the body still gets the carbs it needs and yet still burns fat off. it's awsome !!
i suggest as a sugar alternative STEVIA!! splenda was being tested as a pesticide , that is how they found it was sweet. nutrasweet just as bad, it metabolizes similar to chemicals contained in fire ant venom and formaldehyde in the body. please dear GODS if you must have sweet, use STEVIA or RAW SUGAR!!
whats more there are no long term studies cataloging the effects of long term ingestion of either nutrasweet or splenda.
alos keep in mind , not everyones body works the same way. so where a low carb diet works for some it won't work for everyone.
Can the lo-carb monsters help me lose weight? I was just wondering if the lo-carb monster would help me lose weight. it only has 20 calories, 3g of sugar and 3g of carbs. Thats healthy right??? I heard it speeds up your metabolism. Dont tell me about the health risks cause thats not my question. And dont tell me to just drink water.
