Fetal Risk Summary

The indandione derivative, anisindione, is an oral anticoagulant. It is structurally related to phenindione, an anticoagulant not available in the United States.

In an investigation of the effects of occlusive thromboaortopathy (Takayasu's disease) on pregnancy, 4 of 27 women were maintained on anisindione throughout five pregnancies (1). No neonatal complications or anomalies were observed in the five infants. (See Coumarin Derivatives.)
