A very small amount of theophylline is absorbed by rubbing it on the thighs and unless you are allergic to the rest of the ingredients in the preparation, you should not have a problem. Typically it is used to reverse the symptoms of asthma when it is inhaled as a Rx aerosol. I never have understood how rubbing anything ion the skin can reduce the amount of fat contained adipose cells.

To parents with babies who have taken aminophylline...?
My premature son has been taking aminophylline for apnea and bradycardia for several weeks now, and it's almost time for him to stop. I am a little nervouse about it, but my main question is, if your baby has taken it, did you notice a difference in their sleep patterns, as the medication is a central nervous system stimulant.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

My premature son who is now almost 10 months used Aminophylline when he was 2 months till he was 5 months old, and when he stopped there were no problems until he started teething 4 or 5 weeks later. So don't worry.

If this is to be given as a constant infusion, say over 20 minutes in 50 cc of D5W, it would be injected into a 50 cc bag of D5W and run at 150 cc/hr for 20 minutes

I answered the question but worked it two different ways to see the first answer I got is 5 and the second way I worked it was 19.5.

Divide 180 by 2.2, then multiply that by 5, then administer the appropriate milliliters.

Truphylline is the brand name of the aminophylline drug combination of theophylline and ethylenediamine. It may be given as a suppository of 500 mg

Interesting question, why under diabetes. Aminophylline is an old drug which as a young GP I always carried in my bag as the mainstay for acute asthma attacks.It replaced adrenaline.Soon after I entered practise is was replaced by nebuliser therapy. We were always taught to give it as a bolus injection over no less than ten minutes and then to set up an infusion if needed. As time went on concerns grew and the instruction was added that it should only be given with the patient on an ECG machine in case heart rhythm problems developed. It is still used in hospital only, the current SIGN guideline on asthma says it should only be given by senior staff in patients with severe asthma that has not responded to nebuliser therapy. In these cases a loading injection is used unless the patient is taking a theophylline by mouth.
